300 WSM where do I start ?

Got a buddy with a Remington 700 , 300 WSM, wants to start target shooting with us.

What Bullet weight and type of powder would you suggest,,,,,, looking for experienced advice here.

How serious is the target shooting? Match bullets aren't cheap. There are 150 grain and 155 grain A-Max Varget loads on Hodgdon's site. Oddly there are no Varget loads for a 168 grain bullet. Likely are in their manual though.

H4350 is a good powder for the WSM...use with any 168gr or heavier...

4350 seems to be popular and 4831 as well.

I use 155 gr a-max with 67gr of W760. A-max's are cheap and very accurate!

I have used H-380 and H-4350 with good results behind a 175 gr SMK

We,re looking at trying 155 smk's in front of 4350 for a first load, the N/F software gives us the best results on paper.

As an aside, has anyone used H414 - the sperical equivalent of H4350? It might meter a bit better than the H4350.

I use 414 in my 300 SAUM witch is almost identical to the wsm case. I put 64 grains under a 150 grain tsx with a cci 250 and it is a tack driver.

Give the 208 gr Hornady Amax bullets a whirl.

They have a much higher BC than the 155's which will significantly reduce your wind drift at long range.

If you're going to get beat up with big recoil you might as well make it worth while.

Also for powder, give some consideration to Hodgdon's Hybrid 100V. You should find it gives much higher velocities (more than 100 FPS higher) than Varget or H4350.

Never noticed ANY recoil on a short mag before. Another buddy has one with a heavy barrell and stock.

Factory SPS could be different I guess.
I don't want anything that's gonna beat him up, I need him thinking about the target not the recoil. 155's work great for the 308's out to 1000, better than the 168's do.
