i am looking at rechambering my 308 ftr savage to 300 win mag and was wondering if anyone has done this? i realize one of the problems will be that it will not eject live rounds without pulling the bolt and this does not concern me. i will need a new bolt head... where does a guy source one of these in canada. any input or thoughts are appreciated. i have this gun laying around and was looking at selling it and doing another rem action, but i would probably take a bath if i were to sell it so am looking at this as an option. it shoots good as a 308 so should do good as a 300 as well. thanks

you will need a new bolt head and barrel. Otherwise, as a single shot, just change the bolt head (adjust for firing pin protrusion if necessary) and barrel and make noise. Takes me less then 20mins to do this makeover.

It might eject the loaded magnum rd as the action opening is quite long. EDIT - Never mind, you have the 'small' port on the single shot action.

Can offer you the prefit Shilen match barrels if interested.

Bolt heads are not readily available..... well, kind of sort of, not really. PM me.

I was looking to do the same with one of my Savage rifles but in a 300 wsm. Will searching around online, I came across a company called "Sharp Shooter Supply" they carries factory Savage bolt heads for different cal. They are located in the US, but will ship to Canada.

im in the middle of doing this with my savage 12 F/TR(300wsm).the best info i have as of yet is from http://www.sharpshootersupply.com/
go there and you will find all you need, and yes they will ship to canada(some stuff)also have a look at the tech update link they have on the left side.alot of info for you on the mag convertion.

i think you wouldhave some trouble doing this.

the 308 is a short action rifle, im not 100% sure but i think the opening for ejecton on the ftr is a short action one, and the 300 winmag is a long action cartrige. 300 WSM might be possable.
you shouldent need to get a new bbl as the 300 winmag is bigger around and longer than a 308. so a chamber reamer should be all you need. of course and a new bolt face.

this is coming from what memory i have first thing in the morning so forgive any wrong info.

Short actions for long cartridges is a pain in the ass, especially if VLD bullets are in your future. Converting to a Short Mag would be a great option, or frankly I think the re-sale on that gun would be better than you think.

I'm sure you've thought out your cartrige choice quite carefully, but have you considered a short mag? Particularly a 7WSM. I know you have that excellent 280AI but the 7WSM is a phenomenal long-distance cartridge as well.

i totally agree on the 7 mm as a long range caliber, hence the 280. the ftr was a spur of the moment buy and am just looking to "upgrade" it for minimal cost which is why i was looking at the 300. if i go to a 7 wsm i have to rebarrel. if i go that route i would start with a rem since i am not totally impressed with the accutrigger. what is a reasonable price to expect for the ftr, i have just under 700 rounds through it. keep in mind i am just looking for a reasonably accurate 2nd rifle to shoot while the 280 cools. i have shot the 308 out to 1200 yards quite accurately, but as most of you know the wind is a real killer on the 155's out there.

Around $1000 should get some bites. They are retailing for around $1200 (if you can find any), right?

If you don't like the accutrigger, consider a Stevens, Rifle Basix 2 trigger group, stock, and a new barrel. This way you get all you want at about the same price as the FTR.

As for cal, since you already have a 7mm, why not try a 6mm or a 6.5? Going 100fps faster isn't going to change much in LR performance and the barrel wear on the WSM is pretty high.

The wind drift is not that far off your 7mm and you will get a few more shots between coolings. For a LR plinker, the 6 BR might just be the best giggles for the dollars spent.

Plus you will get at least twice the barrel life.
