Is it worth switching from a 300rum to a 300prc, it’s probably been debated 1000 times but I’m too lazy to look through all the posts.

Only reason im considering the switch is the prc load data shows 6-10gr less powder per round.

I’m currently shooting 208gr a max’s with 88.5gr of RL 25 @ 3000fps. Hornady shows the 300prc with a 212 eldx with 79.8(max load) @ 2950fps.

Is the cost of dies and gunsmithing worth it for saved powder?

Thoughts……

Keep the .300 rum and shoot the #### out of it! At the powder difference of 10 grains It will take you 700 rounds shot to burn an extra pound of powder. Way less than a rechamber

Yes - shoot the 300 RUM, you already have the rifle, the load, the reloading stuff, it would take you years to even out ... I have a 300 WM, it just doesn't make sense to me to switch out to another 300 like a RUM or PRC, to me anyways ...

Honestly not worth it to switch. Not from a strictly cost perspective. Even if you were planning to rebarrel the rum because it was shot out between the cost of dies and load development it would take you quite some time to make up for it with that 6-10gr of powder.

For example if you’re using H1000 is roughly $112 after taxes here in BC at cabelas if they have it stocked. That roughly $0.016 per grain of powder. So average 8grains per shot = $0.128 let’s round up to 13 cents for the sake of discussion.

A Forster fl sizing die is $100 from Hirsch before shipping.

To make up the cost of the die alone you need to shoot roughly 769 rounds to break even on the sizing die alone.

The 300PRC is within 1grain of case capacity of the 300Ackley mag which won its fair share at 1k for many years. No wonder it’s liked.
Slow with a bigger case equates to less pressure. Or a partially full case of excessively fast powder will show pressure but at lower velocities. You should be using around 100 grains of powder.
