Really depends on what you are trying to accomplish and how far you intend to go? The further you go and the harder you want to hit, the larger and longer the case.

More energy in, more energy out...

For those type of distances, you can easily use a 6BR for target shooting and varminting. For hunting, my ideal would be a fast 7mm and 162gr Amax/SST/Accubond.

You could just as easily use a heavy for calibre bullet from 6.5 to 30 out of a '06 and larger case. That is not very far to be able to kill something effectively. The only thing I would want is reduced wind drift and high retained impact velocity.

Here a fast 7mm like the 7RM/WSM/280 reg and AI or 7 Mystic are ideal. A 6.5-284, 6.5-06, 6.5Rem and win mag are more then enough gun too.

As to the orig question, the 300WM is more then enough. Would hunt with 180gr SST or 178gr Amax and have at it.

300 Rum

Well I have three Remington 700 Police rifles; 223, 308, 300 RUM. The 308 is fine at 500 yards. I have yet to stretch out the 300 RUM but I can tell you that 100 grns of powder per case tends to make a pound of powder disappear quickly not to mention the slow powders are hard on the barrel life.

My personal favorite is the .300 win mag. That said my shooting partner has a 700Police in .308 and 1000yrds with it is no problem. The thing is once you hit 500-600yrds its going to be like shooting 100yrds now, then the desire to reach out to 1000, after that same thing then out to 1500-2000.......just the way it goes its a bug...so I would recomend the .300 win mag between your two options. If your open to more Mystic's 7RM is another excellent choice as are a few others, another question to ask is it just paper or will you be taking game and what type?

300 Ultra vs 300 WinMag

I agree with Mysticplayer, I looked at this for a long time while trying decide what kind of rifle I would like to start with for long distances, I already have a .223, and .308. To be honest I could not find a significant difference between the various 300 short and long magnums and for me the sweetspot was 7mmWSM. The short fat case contributes to accuracy, and the longer bullets seem to have a better BC and hence fly better.

Below I tabulated a number of loads using the same 175gn smk, the last 2 entries are for 7mm using a smk and a Berger 180gn VLD. For all I used Varget and loaded to 85% of max pressure so that the playing field would be even.
What do you think??

I have seen some exceptionally good shooting done with Remington Sendero's in 300 Winmag that exceeds the needs of anything but the most extreme hunting scenario. In the right hands, 300 Win mag is very accurate. That will not be a problem at all.
