What bullet weights do you guys get good groups with for 200yds or less? I just bought one in 1 in 10 twist and I would like to win a local hunters shoot with it... I'm going to try anyways. I don't have any 30cal target bullets so I'm curious what others are using. I'm thinking a 165 or 180gr flat base of some type. I have some old lathe turned noslers for hunting for when I decide to develop a load and hunt with it.

Thanks
Mike

I would be inclined to choose a 220 gr MK. for use in a .300 Winchester. Your 1:10 barrel shouldn't have any trouble stabilizing this bullet, and had you a faster twist barrel, I would of chosen the 240 gr. MK.

The advantages of a heavy bullet are; less wind deflection, smaller powder charge, lower muzzle velocity (which can decrease the extreme velocity spread of a string), and less velocity drop at the target. According to the recoil calculator, when both 168 and 220 gr bullets are fired with maximum loads from the same rifle, the difference in recoil would not be discernible. While you might argue that the heavy bullet would be better suited for long range, the only disadvantage for close to moderate range shooting would be the weight of the ammo.

At short range I would try 150, 165, 168, and 180 grain flat base bullets.

Just look at what the hunter bench crew use, but don't use use match bullets designed for 308 velocities (they usually don't like magnum velocities).

Good luck!

165 grain Game Kings have shot awsome in all the 300's I have loaded for,
9 to be exact.
Non group3ed larger than .75 at 100 yards, 5 shots.
Some were REAL tight!
Rifles are all hunting rigs, two with after market barrels, most are either Remingtons or Winchesters.
I'd reccomend that bullet to anyone looking for accuracy from a hunting rifle.

The Sierra 168gr HPBTM bullet was optimized for 300m for 7.62 centrefire target rifles for one particular World Shooting Championships.

The theory of flat base bullets is that they stabilize faster for short range work.
Like Boomer said the big SMK's are hard to go wrong with.
