Got a chance to nab a new one possibly.. .another Tikka T3 stnls/burris combo..what is the 300wsm like...deer and elk and such out to 300 yards....just need some input

Excellent calibre for all the North American "thin skinned" game. This may indeed be my next calibre of choice if I get tired of shooting the .300 WM.
300 yards is a walk in the park for this calibre, in fact you are easily good out to 500 or more with the 300 WSM.

Mine isn't in a sporting rifle configuration, but it is a very fun cartridge to play with, and will toss a moderately heavy ( 200 - 210 grain ) bullet flat enough to make it a viable long range hunting cartridge .

I may nab it here in a bit.;) ..try it out and see what it's like.....price is right on it for sure, too good to pass up......may be good trading material for a nice 22-250 or good long range varmint cal:D

Thanks for all the replies and opinions fellas

Think of the 300 wsm as either a fast 30-06 or a slow 300 Winchester. With bullets 165 grains and lighter it is closer to the 300 mag. With bullets 180 grains and heavier the 30-06 is nipping at it's heels. (This is with handloads)

As the 30-06 is a bona-fide 350 yard big game cartridge the 300 wsm is at least as capable.

In truth however the 300wsm should be compared to the 308 Winchester , not the '06 or 300 mags. The only advantage the short mag has over the longer rounds is it's ability to be chambered in light little short action rifles. In the T-3 however it is a moot point as the rifles weight the same regardless of chambering. If the price is right on the T-3 buy it but don't pay a premium because it is chambered for the wsm.

So with that last statement you are saying the same as "the 300 Win mag has no advantage over the 300WSM"?

They are so close to identical that it is not worth debatinaabout.
Mine is in a 950T action ( medium action) and works very well.
however, if it were a 300win Mag, with the same barrel and a longer action, the results would likely be the same.
it is the barrel on my rifle that makes the difference, not the cartridge.

Limbsaver recoil pads help, a kid I work with has a T3 270wsm and he put one on his and it helped alot.

loading it down to 30-06 speeds will help too. afterall, you're looking for 300'ish yard capability, so max velocity isnt needed

or sell it. someone will buy it :D

It's not superbad in the recoil department by any means,I have a bit of shoulder and back troubles that gives me hell with larger rifles...about the heaviest thing I can and like to shoot comfortably would be a 30.06 and down...it can sit in the safe as well,no biggie there, can never have too much iron:D ...figured maybe someone may want decent long range rifle...I shoulda kept that 260 I had:rolleyes:

handloading the 300 wsm its hard to achive more than 3000 fps. the 300 wm is much faster but the shorts seem more accurate. i don't think too many 30 06 can get close to 3000 ft with 180 grn bullets.

Have you put the balistics side by side? the 300WSM and the 300win mag are damm near Idenetical.

MV(fps)V @ 200 yds MEftlb E200y
.308 Win. (180 Sp) 2620 2198 2743 1930
.300 WSM (180 Sp) 2970 2549 3526 2598
.300 Win. Mag. (180 Sp) 2960 2540 3501 2578

I dont understand how you can say that the 300WSM is comparable to the 308 ? 300WSM has a bit more than the 300WM

That's a pretty wid open statement.
I seen several 300 WSM's thhat have no problem reaching 3,000FPS.
Both are very close, indeeed!

300WSM has a bit more than the 300WM

Good marketing by winchester and Browning has convinced many people that the 300wsm is the more powerful cartridge. The factory loads for the 300wsm are quite hot compared to most factory loads for the 300wm.However if you reload both cartridges, the extra case capacity of the 300wm does result in more velocity potential for the 300wm,especially with heavier bullets. The difference is not large, but it does exist. If you must use factory loads for your comparison, have a look at this 300wm load by hornady.

300 WIN MAG 180 GR Spire Point HEAVY MAG 8500
Velocity (fps) / Energy (ft-lbs)
Muzzle 100 yd 200 yd 300 yd 400 yd 500 yd
3100/3840 2872/3296 2655/2817 2448/2396 2251/2025 2063/1701

Trajectory (inches)
Muzzle 100 yd 200 yd 300 yd 400 yd 500 yd
-1.5 1.40 0.00 -6.3 -18.4 -37.4

Can you find a 300wsm load that offers better ballistics?
