Only, perhaps, 30-30 has killed more North American big game than the 303 British. Buy some 150gr SP ammo for deer/black bear sized game, or 180's for bigger stuff, and you can head out to the field with confidence. It's not a real long range caliber, but it will kill game out to 300 yards, no problem.
303 rocks for hunting, reload 125 grain to 215 grain bullets,5 neck shots and counting with the 125 grain sierra's on 4 deer and 1 40'' moose all at under 150 yards mind you.by the way...
remember that thumbhole stock you sold me.pics will be up in the hunting and sporting arms section tonight for all to see,got it 2 days before christmasjust have to scope it now.

I thought it would be right up there with the 30-30 in Canada for most game taken, I have an add somewhere in my "man-room" in 1949 you could buy a 303 Lee Enfield for $9.95 with 2 boxes of ammo!!
Like everyone has said, good cartridge. Not every cut down Lee Enfield has spectacular accuracy. Actually, none of them really meet that term, since they were not designed to be of top accuracy. But, good enough accuracy for hunting.
I always remember the Norwegian trapper who had spent most of his life in northern BC, in grizzly bear country. He told me you should have at least a 303 British for grizzly bears.
good ennough to kill Germans, Japs, Indians, Africans, etc... Lets not forget that its one of the most popular hunting cartridges in Canada and that it probably killed more game that all the other calibers...
The Wife (tm) and I both have killed lots of critters with a 303 British -- deer, elk, bear, groundhog, grouse, etc. Works great. For hunting ammo, I like 180 grain grey-box Winchester PowerPoint's. 303's will eat brass too fast to make reloading much use - unlress you already reload, I'd recommend you just stick with store-bought fodder.
There is no game on the North American continent that cannot be killed by the .303 British. As far as power or range is concerned, it is in between .308 and .30-06. While larger calibres would be better for Kodiac bears, I would not feel undergunned with a good .303 Lee Enfield.
