.303 British

took my first deer with the one my uncle carried in France.Full wood with a bayonet lug and flip up vernier sight if I recall correctly...
IMO a good .30 cal with little felt recoil(if any) perfect starter caliber for deer.
 
Love the .303. Been hoarding them for a few years now. How can you say no to 100-200 dollar bolt actions with sporter/ military wood and 10 round magazines??!?!?
 
Can't go wrong for the price you can pick up a rifle for and they've been harvesting animals in Canada for a looooong time, very capable.
 
303 brit was nice on our little 400yard gong last year, just a nice little splatter circle where it had taken the paint off, as opposed to the 30-378wby with 180gr tsx that was punching holes through it like it was paper.

we really were impressed with the old enfield though because my friend was hitting the gong like clockwork with the open sights ramp dialed up to 400

the brit has been putting meat in canadian freezers decade after decade, generation after generation.. you will find it has lots of fans on here.
I find the brit based wildcats quite interesting though I dont have one

but the guys are right, try the search button you will find lots of interesting threads.
 
Here's a W.W. Greener Mauser in .303 British, probably built in the 20's. Reason modern bolt-actions arent chambered in .303 is due to the rim I imagine. Still a great lever and single-action cartridge. I have probably 20+ rifles chambered in .303 between my Enfields and Ross's, so obviously I'm a big fan. Another cool round is the 7.65X53. Basically a rimless .303 and very under rated.

Nothing wrong with the cartridge - it's the sh-itty platforms they are offered in (Hog-legged Lee Enfields)!!. I agree with Gatehouse with regards to availabilty in a modern bolt action. If they offered the .303 Brit in either M700 Rem or M70 Win .... I would be on that like a wood tick on a testicle.

Sporterized by BSA. Got it for a song. It even had a Timney trigger. I just re-did the bedding and re-oiled the stock.

I really like the .303, and with more modern powders and bullets like the TSX, the old warhorse is fine for all but the most specialized hunting situations. Now if I could just actually find some of those TSX's...

Nothin wrong with additional 303 threads :)

Oh, and while I cannot speak for the rest of the country, in Newfoundland the 303 brit round has taken more game than any other round by FAR, even 30-30!
