So I have a question, I want to load for my newly acquired 1905 Ross in 303 Britts for moose and bears and I have a few choices of bullet available to me, .311 180gn hot-cor, 174gn rn, .312Hornady interlock, .312 174gn pp sp woodleigh, .312 215gn rn sp woodleigh.
The rifle will only even have open sights and the distances will be kept under 200m!
I’m thinking the 215 would be fun and it would be great for around camp if something comes up, that rifle can shoot 6 rounds in a hurry!
What are your thoughts!!

I'd lean towards the 174gr woodleigh or 180 speer, whichever shoots better.

215RN should work fine, but I like velocity so a 175-180 with a better BC is more up my alley.

Basic step adjustable rear sight. You will need a load that works within the adjustment range of the sight. I suppose the blade on the front sight could be replaced if necessary.
Looking at the groups posted in your other thread, it would seem all you need to do is shift the rear sight to bring the group to the center line. Doesn't look as if you are going to have a problem getting a zero with a hunting load.
I have a 1905R which has had a rear sporting peep sight installed. It required a higher front sight blade to zero.
I have a couple of boxes of Woodleigh 215s tucked away. They would be great for duplicating Mk. VI ballistics.
The 1905R rifles are light and slim; you are aware of recoil when you shoot one.

ive shot Sambar deer with the 215s from Woodleigh...... i dont think its the ideal weight for the 303, esp open sights.... youl get better mileage with the 180gr / 174gr variants.... PPSN or the Hot Cor...

ive used the 180gr hot cor, 174 ppsn, 150 gr stuff and the 215s........ my choice for any big game would be the 180gr model, unless it was like super close an thick animals--- but 215 is a bit how ya going at 200m or further, whereas the 180s will hum ding all day..imo

I got great expansion on every deer and moose I have shot with the old C.I.L. KKSP 215's out to 250+ yards, as well as the Speer 180's .
The Chinchaga 212's worked well, too
My goto these days however is the Barnes 150 grain .311TSX🙂

Personally I would use the 215 grain bullets. The old Dominion 215 and later Imperials were deadly on moose in my area. Those long heavy for caliber bullets will wade a lot of meat and break heavy bone. Never used Woodleigh but they have a rep for toughness.

Interestingly, I only recovered a couple of 215KKSP's over the years, and both had reacted much like a Partition, with the rear half of the bullet intact right in front of the jacket stakes!
The three other moose and al my deer were pass throughs with big expansion on the off side.

I have 215 and two different 174gn coming to me from a friend and a bunch of brass!!
So I should see some range time in a few weeks with than rifle

At the range now and shooting some loads with the Ross, 174gn bullets interlock .312 and some woodleigh 174gn .312, so as per then book at 48gn of h4350 gives them 2500fps and I’m getting 400fps less with the interlock and 300fps less with the woodleigh.
So since there isn’t much more room in the case for more powder I should switch powder?
Then it might also mean a roomy chamber?
Any suggestions?
