303 Improved Reamer

I have checked into renting them , 3 day rental and its got to come across the border. if the chamber is all ready 303 brit and I'm going to 303 epps or 303 Ackley Improved ,can I just use a finishing reamer?

As far as I know, most guys that are not doing a whole pile of barrels, use a finishing reamer only.

Since you already have almost all the chamber cut out (the original one) it would be rather a poor investment to spring for a rougher, I think.

There was a guy advertising a bunch of reamers on the US side, on several different forums. Dunno whether he has anything useful to you. Go take a look at 6mmbr.com and search the classifieds there. There seems an active trade in reamers.

Hello folks, just found and joined this page. I have several .303's that have gotten sloppy and I decided several years ago to ream them out. What I am looking for is dimensioned drawings for the .303 Ackley Improved. With that I can get a reamer made. Reamers run about $100 US. Five years ago, Clymer used to make a custom one for the Ackley Improved but they no longer have the drawings, they said, since they are no longer owned by the Clymer family. Downsized after the buy-out, I guess.
I know that there are slight differences in size between the Apps and the Ackley, with the latter being slightly larger.
I was looking at a site to make my own reamers and I have a barrel that I can play with and I won't be out anything if I ruin it, it is pretty much gone anyway without the reaming.
Anway, if you can assist...

There was a shop at Whipple Tree Juntion south of Duncan that used to be a gun shop 8 yrs ago, I know that the old fellow that run it passed on, there was also reamers and actions already done up that came from Waddy Weeks place when he passed on and the shop bought all the stuff from Weeks. Some body from the Duncan area would if that shop still exist. Hope this helps because I'm still kicking my ass to this day that I did not buy the stuff.

The ones that Weeks had ,weren't his .But ,they disappeared.A friend of mine was a good friend of Weeks and he thinks someone on the south island has them and doesn't knows what they have.

If you are considering making your own reamer then you must have a lathe. Why not make a D bit (spade bit). Since you already have a chamber to work from, take a chamber cast so that you know the minimum dimensions of the body of the new cartridge and do not leave an unintended bulge in mid body. Normally the neck would be .004" oversize but again dealing with an existing chamber that may be smaller than you have.
If you have not made one before, turn a steel cartridge with an integral pilot .001" undersize and about 1" long plus a shank at the back which is center drilled to push with the tail stock center. When you temper it, quench it spinning to avoid warping and then grind to about .010" greater than 50%. If this were being used in an unchambered barrel, you would also have to relieve all but the last little bit of the leading edge of the shoulder where the neck ends (I am sure that I have described that poorly) Put your lathe at dead slow and clear the chips often plus lots of cutting oil

If you get one I'd like to rent it from you.
