Howdy,

On my Lee reloading data for .303 it shows a load using a 100 grain jacketed bullet and 15-17 grains of H4227 at around 1600 fps. I think this would be great for new shooters and for potting the odd chicken in moose season. The only rub is that I can't seem to find 100 grain jacketed bullets in the appropriate size anywhere. Does anyone have a source on these, or does anyone have a similar load using the much more available 125 grain bullets?

Thanks,

Brodie

Why use jacketed bullets and not cast? Saves you money, easier on the bore, but I'd suggest using cast bullets of 180-215 gr. as that is what the rifling twist is meant for and will be most accurate. Should cut your bullet costs in half and be more accurate.

Use 32 cal pistol bullets. They are .312". You can get 71 Grain fmj or 85 and 100 gr. jacketed HP or SP bullets.

Unfortunately in Manitoba we are not allowed anymore to use high power rifles on chickens. So I have to carry a 22 or shotgun around with me. otherwise I would consider same load you are looking at.

$26.99 for 500 .32cal 100 grain cast bullets came up when I did a quick search on wholesale sports, damn cheap! The .312 diameter might be even better then the recommended .311 if the Enfield's barrel has seen as many years of service as mine haha.

Four grains of Unique will give you around 900fps with the 90-100gr cast bullets with one hole accuracy at chicken ranges in a .303.Use standard primers not mags...........Harold

I do the 123 grain bullets in my 303 over 13 grains of Red Dot and standard primers for about 1700FPS (according to my chronograph). I get 1950FPS using that same load and a 110 grain bullet in my 308 Winchester. The 308 is similar enough case capacity that I would expect you to get a whisker over 2000FPS with 100 grain's in a 303.

Side note - Red Dot is VERY good for reduced loads, because 13 grains of it fills up just over half the case in a 308/303/etc class round. That means a double-charge is impossible.

This sounds good, and subsonic too. Do you use some sort of filler with only 4 grains of powder in there, or is it good as is?

I've never used a filler but you can use a small piece of kapok or hornet nest to keep the powder tight to the primer.Amazingly they usually hit to point of aim!Give them a try.................Harold

I expect those are the exact same ones as I'm using. 110 grain FMJ's that were pulled from 30 carbine bullets. I get about 1.5" groups at 100 meters with the reduced loads.

Also, Frontier makes some plated 110 grain 30 carbine bullets for cheap that I also use (but the accuracy of those is not so good - but still minute of steel plate at 100 meters, so it's fun). :)

What I ended up doing last year was buying a box of 100gr XTP's in .312 diameter for my .303. I wanted a gopher load so the charge was a full Lee scoop that came with my dies. The crux is that the bullet is awfully short and in order to feed from the magazine, they had to be seated awfully far out, enough so that they wobbled. Concerned, I simply seated them to the cannelure and fed them in singly. As far as POI, out to about 75 yards I simply put the gopher on top of the front sight and then detonated him. 110grn cast would be a viable alternative but I am afraid of richochets while blasting at varmints
