.303 reloading question

Looking at the Reloaders.net web site, 41gr's of 4895 for a 150gr is 2465 fps. Looking in my books, Speer #11 has MAX 42 gr at 2594fps, #14 has it at 44gr at 2695. Going by the books, you should be ok. Tho I would start about 37 to 38 gr and work up in 1/2 gr increments from there.

Just my 5 cents worth.

Thanks. Just making sure I am not totally out to lunch.

Looking at Hornady 9th edition manual, list H4895 for 150 interlock SP start at 29.9 to max of 38.9 . Lyman 49th edition manual lists start of 38 to max 42. IMR also makes a 4895 powder. It's a good idea to have a few reloading manuals on hand to cross reference data before reloading.

It's hot, but the rifles can handle it.

I find I get th best accuracy from loads a bit milder.

With the 150 Hornady, I use 40 grains of 4064, keeping the slightly-slower 4895 for the Sierra 180, with which 38 grains usually gives superb shooting, if a tad mild.

I also seat all my bullets to the OAL of a Ball round: better feeding, milder pressures AND it crowds the leade just a bit, helping the accuracy.

Hope this helps.

I've been told you can get better accuracy loading closer to original load velocities. Going to be working on my own 303 load starting this Spring. Happy shooting.

I am just using a Lee handloading set. I just loaded up 20 rds of Hornady SST over 38.2gr of H-4895. It should give me around 2500 fps. I seated the bullet to 78mm (3.07 inches) overall length. I will see how this shoots. Thanks guys.

I've had good results in a number of .303s when using RL15, IMR4350, IMR4064, W760, H414,and Varget-all somewhat slower burning than IMR4895 and H4895.

If a person reloads for a variety of MILSURP ctgs and really wants to boil his powder selections down to a single propellant, IMR4064 is good with just about any of the common MILSURP ctgs that I can think of incl 5.56/.223 Rem, 6.5 Swede, 7x57 Mauser, .30-06, 7.62 NATO/.308 Win, .303 Brit, 7.62 Russian and 8x57 Mauser. 4064 is an excellent choice for the M1 Garand as well, both in terms of functionality and accuracy. 4064 is a bit "loggy" in a powder measure, but you can throw charges just a bit below desired weight and then finish off each load with a powder trickler.
