303 Sav Hunting Load

The Barnes bullets are fairly priced. The Hawk bullets are spendy. Having said that I shot a big bear a week or so ago with the Leverevolution load from the magazine you noted and a Hawk 190 grain bullet. The 190 Hawk was travelling 2100 fps out of my 20" barreled 1899H. Hit him right behind the front shoulder complete pass through with major damage to heart and lungs. Range was 65 yards.

I’ve worked up a couple good ones:

150gr Hornady RN, 41gr LeverEvolution, Fed210, PPU brass, 2.520” COAL, 2460 fps from my 22” Savage 99 from1920.

170gr Hornady FP, 37.5g LeverEvolution, Fed210, PPU brass, 2.520” COAL for 2270 from the same gun

170gr Speer FP, same load 2330 fps.

I got my hands on 100 count 190gr Barnes Original and hope to shoot them soon with a ladder test. Hoping for 2200fps and likely be 38gr LeverEvolution when I get there. But have not tried it yet.
 
DO NOT use the 38 grain (Lever evolution) load data from Wieland/Handloader. That load is way too hot. I had two completely separated cases in my excellent shape 1899H. The brass was new PRVI. Use Barnes data for 190 in the .30-30 with Lever evolution. Much better suited load for the older Savage .303's out there. 33.8 grains will get you just short of 2200 FPS in a 24" barrel. Water filled jugs at 25 yards is hardly a substitute for game shots taken over varying ranges. Seating the bullet past the cannelure is also less than ideal (less powder capacity). Hornady lists 2400fps to 3400 fps muzzle velocity for the bullet noted in the notes you linked. I would call that bullet too heavily constructed for the old .303 Savage.

Does 30 gr of Win 748 in a 30-30 180gr Hornady RN count ? I've shot several moose with those.Sorry.................. didn't have any water jugs to shoot.
 
Don't have any idea. How far were the moose? How many shots to kill the moose? etc etc Did not say the bullet would not work, just said it is not suited to the .303 Savage ideally and that is what we should strive for when hunting.

So is there a source for new brass for this old beauty ? annd, are the bullets mentioned in this thread the better of what's available ?

I'm also lookin for a replacement rear stock for one. The one I just received has the octagon barrel...an unfinished replacement "bubba" home made rear wood and by the looks of the age and patina on the wood, I'm assuming that the original owner also decided to checker the fore end with 1/4 inch diamond pattern.

Story goes that it was found in a collapsed barn some years after it caved in. The family knew it was in there for quite a time before the barn caved...was years later before any search was under taken. It was eventually found with a smashed rear stock. Was given to "bubba" cuz he knew how to fix it...lmfao...
Was kept in there for happenstance shots on deer...moose while in there working.

Pretty neat old gun for sure...gonna give it a good going thru and clean....bore is very dirty and dark...gonna be a next week start project.

PRIVI + Winchester makes brass.......S+B primer holes are sometimes off center.
