303 Savage - What is the Base Cartridge

Manual of cartridge conversions says 220 Swift. It's pretty standard/straight forward;
Anneal and taper expand to .310, re-anneal and F/L size in the 303 die with expander removed. Trim, chamfer and F/L size again. Fireform.
--220 rim MAY have to be thickened to .060-.063.

The 303 Savage is a rimmed cartridge, the 6 mm Lee is a rimless cartridge. They are not interchangable! The 303 savage has a rim size off .505" and a case size in front of the rim, of.422".For the swift, the case size is .445 and the rim is .473".

The 6 mm Lee may hace inspired other cartridges, but it isen't the parent of any!

Just checked "Cartridges of the World". Rim diameter is given as .501 whereas the rim diameter of the 220 Swift is given as .472. This is a significent difference. Base Diameter of the Savage is .439 and the Swift's is .443, not quite so much of a difference! :!: :D

I have shot 30-30 brass in a 303S, but it is not recomended.

Many have been happy with cartridge conversions from 30-40 or 303 Brit.
It takes a little lathe work, but those who do it are happy with the results.

I was afraid of that.....a good friend asked me to confirm it or not.....

You can make 303 Savage brass by forming from 220 Swift, and the brass is much stronger than original 303 Savage brass.

Case forming die sets are available from RCBS, C-H and Redding. Set will cost you around $150 including seating die, but at more than $2.00 each for 303Savage brass, it won't take long to pay for the dies. :)

.236 was made in a rimless and rimmed version. The rimless version was later redesignated 6mm Lee Navy.
