Making up ammo for a Savage 24 that had the 20 gauge barrel sleeved and chambered for a shortened .303 British cartridge. So far, I have found that a 7.62x54r case length gauge and a .303 lock nut/shell holder works fine to shorten the .303 brass. I then resized the brass in a die that has been machined to produce shorter finished brass. Loaded 5 with 5.2 grains of 700X and a Cactus Plains 100 grain RN .311 lead bullet.

Maybe to keep factory .303 cartridges out of a firearm that might not be strong enough.

^^ This. A full length brass will not chamber. On that little combo gun, there is no need for a full house .303, plus there may have been a reason or two that the gunsmith had.

At any rate, it is a simple matter to shorten the brass using a battery screwdriver.

Odd but interesting choice. Could the sleeve be from a .303 Enfield or Pattern 14?
