I have both a nice sporterized .303 as well as a mosin nagant that has seen better days and was going to get a sporter stock for the M44 while I bring the original wood back to life.
What my question is what do you feel is the better cartridge, for hunting deer, black bear, and target shooting.
I know the obvious answer is go out and find out which one shoots better for me, and I plan to do so. Just want to hear your comments as well.

Can't hit the broad side of a barn with my Nagant, but even the crappiest old bubba'd Enfield I have can hit paper. Nagant doesnt even have what you could call a grouping even tho the rifling looks good.

From a purely design perspective, the 54R is the better cartridge, the downside is that most rifles chambered for it are.....well......crappy. Thier bores are sloppy, thier chambers are sloppy etc. There are not alot of 54R chambered guns that utilise the benefits of the 54R. That what you get using non-union labour

I've used two different MNs to take one deer and three bears.

One is a stock 1938 with a pretty nice bore (one deer and one bear) and the other is a Bubba scout rifle I made out of a barrelled action I got from Century with a M44 stock I got later from Century as well, cut the barrel to 22 inches, put a B-Square mount and a pistol scope on and away I went .

I hunted bears with that one until I kind of inherited a US M17 30-06 and then a 300 Winchester on an Enfield action.

That 7.62 x54R has equivalent ballistics to a 308 and is murder on bears or deer, it's just in a rimmed cartridge.
Lung-shot bears still run though, so I've moved my aim point a little forward to get the shoulder too.

From what you're saying, you've go a nice 303. They've killed a lot more deer, bear and moose in Canada than the MN ever will.

It's easier to find hunting ammo for the 303. I was in Crappy tire today, they had 3 different brands and two different bullet weights in 303Brit. They had nothing whatsoever in 7.62x54 (or 39). The local Canadian Tires actually have a decent selection of ammo. I'm sure that you can find 7.62x54 at MOST gunshops, but I have never been anywhere that sold ammo, that didn't have 303Brit.

"...for hunting deer, black bear..." Same excrement, different pile. Both will do nicely for any game. Finding either rifle, in decent condition, is the only thing to worry about. There are lots of bubba'd Enfields with bad headspace(check your's) and crappy, over sized, bores(slug your's). However, like Workin Man says, finding hunting ammo for a .303 will be easier in small places.
For target shooting, it depends on what kind of target shooting you're thinking about. Competitive shooting or just shooting because it's fun?

technically wouldn't all the labor have been union?

 No, the CAW didn't exist in WARSAW Pact nations

Stick with the Enfield, I had my Noisy Maggot for almost a year before I could find ammo.
 Why didn't you just ask me...Hunh :?:
I mean sheesh... :p

the 7.62by54R is the better cartridge and the reason why your rifle may not shoot well is imply because when the war was going they just slap them together and ive shot two mosins with .316 inch barrel and they can't hit nothing.
