303Carbine's marlin 1895 45-70 target

45-70

The data is ,
40 grains IMR 4198
420 grain GC cast bullet
Win LR Primers
The chrono data is posted on the target as well.
Scoped at 75 or 80 yards because the 100 yard range was full up that day out.
The HS initials at the top of the target is the guy who's chrono we ran the bullets through and witnessed the shots.:)

Very nice shooting 303! Looks like your rifle really likes that load. Has it been the same with other loads or was this your most accurate load. Need more info :D

Lets hear more about your load development....

45-70

I'm picking up some 500 grain bullets soon and I have a pound of IMR 4227 that should work good without using any fillers. :) 28 or 27 grains should be top load and will hopefully get around 1500 or better velocity wise !!!
The bullets are the same style as the 420's just 100 grains heavier with the gas check and lube on them.:D Just my luck that I will not see any buffalo here on the Island.........I'm ok with that because they don't want to see me either.:D

Sounds like fun, but you never answered the questions I asked :D

Be carefull with your OAL with the 500's. Marlins don't like long stuff.

Sorry about not answering your question Davey, the 420's so far are the best and the 350's I shot were acceptable for hunting but not quite as accurate in my rifle. I tried a bunch of powders such as 3031, 4064, Varget and all of these were fine as far as accuracy but left a lot of unburnt powder in the barrel. IMR 4198 and IMR 4227 were the cleanest burning powders that I tried so far and gave the best accuracy and velocity without using another 10 to 12 grains of another powder and not burning it all.
The 500 grainers I am picking up are the same profile as the 420 grainers and the crimp groove is in the same place as well and will end up being the same overall cartridge length.:) With IMR 4227 loaded at 27 grains it takes up very little space at the bottom of the case and since I don't like fillers that much I would rather take up the space with more bullet.:)

That's good shooting Mr 303.

I have a buffalo classic H&R with iron sights that has been shooting pretty hot, too. I'll see if I can down size the pic and post it here. I shot it at 50 yards with the Williams rear aperture and the Lyman front globe with inserts. I need to make a sight correction, but the group is pretty decent, for me anyway. Those older cartridges will shoot good, eh?
