307 Winchester

Recently acquired a Winchester 94AE in 307. Looking to hear from anyone using this caliber on Whitetail.
What loads are you having success with.
Have heard good and bad about the Hornady FTX.
Will be used mainly as bush gun or 100 yd max

I have a 94 307. I use the Hornady 170 gr flat nose meant for the 30-30. My last deer was a spine shot just behind the front shoulder. Smashed the spine and exited, seavering the artery. Deer dropped in its tracks. I treat the 307 as a beefed up 30-30. Basically more power and more reach. Easy to reload for. I was really surprised with its accuracy, consistently under 2 inches from the bench at 100. Took me awhile to find one but now I haven’t any intentions of selling it.

don't sell it, I still have a box of Winchester 307 for you.

I may be back in Nova Scotia for a week or two in the summer, and ill need to buy cast bullets (if you have some casted and wish to sell) and ill bring you the box of factory 307win..
if not this summer, ill be back one day. I do still own my house there (actually the bullets are in the house)

i saw a gun at a gun show in this caliber and did not know they existed until then.it was a bolt gun if memory serves me correct.

It’s supposed to equal the 308 in a 94 lever, use 308 dies and data to reload. I bought both the 307 and the 356 a few years ago fun rifles. I’ve seen people claim you can use 308 Win ammo in it, but not sure I would try.

The 307 and 356 are fine cartridges, they just came out 30yrs too late..

I've never used one myself, but one of my brother's has one as his only deer rifle. It's a reliable killer, but not a spectacular one. Don't expect a lot of bang-flops. Deer would typically run 30-70 yds or so before tipping over. I think he used factory 180's mostly.

I’ve seen people claim you can use 308 Win ammo in it, but not sure I would try.

The problem is with the overall length. I tried loading some RN 180's meant for the .308/.30/06 for my brother, but they wouldn't cycle through the action. I did find that an unfired .308 case would extract and eject reliably, in spite of not having a rim. A fired case might be a different story.

It’s a rimmed 308win. A bit of a gimmicky round, which is why it died out I think, but it’s a good cartridge. It has way more reach, better ballistics and more reloading options than 30-30. With the AE you can mount a scope too if that’s your thing. Any 308win die set will work, and any 30-30 bullet will work (150s, 170s, etc). Easy and cheap to load for.

As for performance on deer. My guess is that as long as you use a quality hunting bullet, and hit the vitals, you’ll do just fine.
