I have bought some hornady 110gr fmj projectiles to load into my 308, I'm using bench mark powder, as per hodgedon website I follow the guide for powder , trim length and oal. Problem is that the length that they state is not possible with this projectile it wouldn't even be seated in the case, they ask for 2.690", so I
Opened my hornady reloading book to find what it says 2.515" but it does not list a use for benchmark powder. My question is do you think that seating the bullet in the case (2.515) is safe with benchmark? I'm worried about increased pressure due to deeper seating.

Thanks

A short bullet like the one you are using will likely not be able to be seated close to the lands (or reach the maximum OAL to fit the magazine), as is the usual practice for determining length for rifle cartridges. Given that, you want to leave a reasonable amount of the bullet shank in the case neck to ensure that the bullet is well-supported. The length in the Hornady manual is probably fine.

Changing seating depth with bottleneck cases does not generally cause dramatic changes in pressure to the same extent as with short, straight-walled cases. At any rate, it shouldn't be a problem if you work up your powder charge from the start using the Hodgdon data.

2.69" with 110gr Hornady V-Max and up to 49.2gr of Benchmark in a BLR, soft shooting with no pressure signs. That's way back from the lands as even a COAL (using 155gr A-Max) of 2.870" fits the chamber but nothing over 2.810" fits in the magazine.

For short bullets like that I try to seat so the base of the bulllet is flush with the shoulder/neck junction.
