Has any one tried these with varget. Been developing a load with these, and im not getting the velocity I was expecting.

With 46.5 grs of varget touching the lands, im getting 2796fps. About 100fps lest than I was expecting. If I go to 47gr, I start to see mild pressure signs. Im using Nosler brass, and was told that it was very soft, but not looking to push the load. The accuracy is there @ under .5MOA

What is confusing me is the load is only about 50fps faster than the 165gr sst or the 168gr TTSX which ar sitting on 46gr of varget just toughing the lands (have gone up to 47gr with no pressure signs)

Maybe im just overthinking this, but am I seeing early pressure signs with the scenars. Keep in mind im shooting out of a 20" barrel.

42.5 gr of IMR4895, with scenar 155gr in my savage
110S sillouette gun prints 3/8" group at 150 yards

Try also H335 and use magnum primers
I load 44gr of H335 with scenar it works great
 
I use 45gr Varget, 155 Scenar, fed 210Match, Lapua cases, 2.82COAL, Rem 5R... the 50+ loads I did run thru chrono had velocities from 2760 to 2780fps... very accurate load for my gun!
 
@jpbaker, what is the COAL of your ammo, what rifle are you shooting it in, and what is its barrel length?

The 155 Scenar is a very long bullet, with a lot of the bullet being in the aft portion - @chrismc's load for example would have a lot of the bullet below the case neck, and would probably be a somewhat compressed powder charge.

Ideally, a chamber would allow the 155 Scenar to be loaded to about 2.950"-2.975" COAL, but that is an unusually long leade (factory Remington .308 chambers might permit this though).

If you have a longer chamber, you might be able to safely load more than 46.5 grains of Varget and be able to get good accuracy and velocity.

I loaded 155 Scenars to about 2.840" COAL in my .308 Obermayer chamber; with Lapua brass the most Varget I was able to manage was 45.0-45.5 grains. My chamber was too short to make good use of that bullet.

"...I'm getting 2796fps..." Sounds about right to me. Hodgdon gives 2759 with 44.0 and 2909 with 47.7C of Varget.

Ok

COAL = 2.870" which is touching the lands ogive = 2.260"

Rifle is a savage 110 with 20" Shilen



My current load is 46.5 and recoil is non existent. With 47 there is a noticeable change and slight extractor marks.
 
The last time I used 155 Lapua Scenars I was running 46.0 of Varget at around 2940 fps out of a 30 inch barrel. For the life of me I can not remember where I seated them off the lands. 1000 arrived yesterday so once they are moly coated the testing will begin again. To me velocity doesn't mean too much as long as the load is accurate.
 
In a 30" barrel, 2950fps with a 155 is a typical load and 3000fps is a typical hot load. With a 20" barrel it would not at all be unreasonable to lose about 200fps relative to a 30" barrel, so the ~2800fps you are getting is pretty much in line with what would be expected. And you can do an awful lot with a 155 Scenar at 2800fps (it's definitely a fully-capable 1000 yard loading).

That's a nice chamber length in your Savage (2.870" COAL with a 155 Scenar). You might find really good results with a Berger 185 LRBT, or if you prefer to keep to 155s then you might find the Berger 155.5 Fullbore or 155 Sierra #2156 is a very nice fit to your chamber length (you'll have a bit more powder room that with the Lapua 155).
 
In my Nemesis 20 inch barrel 155 gr Scenar 46.5 gr of R-15, Nosler case, BR-2, neck sized only, super accurate and 2820 fps SD 4, ES 6... JP.

I am curious, what is your cartridge overall length? (I'm wondering whether it's a short-throated or a long-throated chamber)

BTW that is one of the best SDs I have ever seen. How many rounds is that for, and is that a "typical" SD for a string of shots, or a "best" SD? The reason I ask is that the ES of a string is typically about three times the SD of the string, so I am puzzled by your ES of 6 (I would have expected and ES more like 10-14)

This SD and ES is the average of the last 150 shots, my overall lenght is 2.900 with a 0.08 jump this load is my official load, got many groups (45% of them) under one inch @ 300 metres when all is right, 1.2 inch is the average of those groups on the last 150 rounds, the Nemesis is an extraordinairy rifle, ( those are 4 X 10 shots groups, this was one of my best outing)... JP.
