.308 / 7.62x51 FMJ rounds capable of 1MOA for $1 or less in Canada?

Currently looking for ammo for my Remington 700P in .308. I have been shooting Aguila 7.62x51 150gr FMJ.

From suggestions I received on another thread I will be looking into better Match grade ammo; probably choosing 5 or 6 different brand boxes of factory match ammo and testing what my rifles likes (then hopefully in the future using the winner as a guide for reloading). But for the time being, while I work on my skill set I would like to find something cheaper and just for having fun sometimes.

Does anyone have experience with Aguila 7.62x51 150gr? Currently I'm shooting consistent 2moa groups at 100 yards in the prone, with roughly 3-4 out of 10 groups being 1moa or less. I can't tell if the wider groups are me or the ammo at the moment.

I have spent a lot of time researching online but most suggestions if not all are from the US... Does anyone know of another sub $1 round in .308 or 7.62x51 in Canada (in stock / can be ordered) that is capable of 1MOA?

Thanks!

Sub $1/round and consistent 1 MoA are not things that go together. Someone I know has a rifle that just seems to love Norinco steel cased surplus for some reason but that's quite an oddity.

Some people have luck with PRVI ammo but I'm pretty sure it's closer to $25-30 for a box of 20rnds. Same goes for S&B. If you can find any Lake City surplus XM80C 7.62 around it tends to shoot fairly well and I think is $22-23 a box. They have it at the shop at the range I go to.

With handloads I'm approaching $1.10/round with Hornady 178gr ELD-M, Lapua brass, Varget, and CCI primers. With the cheaper Campro 147gr FMJ I can't get any load to shoot under 1.5 MoA with various different powders. The Hornady 150gr FMJ/BT seem much more consistent and shoot much better.

There are several quality brands. Best start with a box of different manufacturers and bullet weights and see what the rifle likes best. With luck your rifle will like the generic brand.....other rifles have exotic tastes my mauser I hunt with spits north American ammo lower than Czech which is spot on.

I see. I just noticed in the US there are people having a lot of luck with rounds that are as low as 60cents...

I have been looking at Wanstalls for that XM80C case but would like to test 20 rounds first. I'll also check out all of your other suggestions. I don't mind spending a day at the range shooting groups to find out what my rifle likes best...

One of the retailers on here needs to come up with a variety box of ammo (10 rounds of each for example brand with 10 high end brands) for everyone who buys a new rifle and needs to find what it likes.

The very best ammo that you can put down your barrel is the stuff that you load yourself, tuned to your rifle. The ammo that I load and use for practice is exactly the same ammo that I use in competition. If you don't use the very best ammo in practice how do you really know if it is you or the ammo?
For a newer shooter if you and the ammo of the day can only manage 2 MOA at best, that's fine. However you need to have some kind of benchmark to be able to say that your ammo is the limiting factor in producing sub MOA groups every time.

One of the vendors does just that for match 22 ammo.

But for your op, I think you’re looking at reloading in order to meet that ask.

Not bad results with Norinco 143.5gr FMJ steel case ammo. I picked up a 1000 round case for 500 bucks total a while back so 50 cents per round. Typical group as shown at 100 meters off the benchrest with my .308 Zastava LKM70 and Nikon Monarch3 4-16x42mm. If I remove the FMJ bullet, pour the powder charge back in the case and install a 130gr SP Hornady bullet it groups tighter.

Have you tried the steel cased 7,62x51 they sell at the army navy stores? My M305 could do from 2 to 3 inches with it (5 shot groups.). I would hope a rifle more accurate like yours could do better. Give it a try, it's 79 for 120. Maybe you'll get 1.5 out of them?

maynard - I will definitely be looking into reloading, but I think there is something to be said for practicing with cheaper rounds. For now I'm going to be testing different rounds and then find something I can mimic. Once I find something, sometime this year I will start to get things ready to begin reloading.

Slamfire - I love the idea of simply swapping out bullets on cheaper rounds. I will definitely look into Norinco.

Dake21 - It's funny you mention that, as I called my local store yesterday and the closest thing they had was Chinese surplus. I have only ever read bad things about Chinese surplus... By any chance is that ammo you found a brand called Monarch or Brown Bear .308 Win - 145gr FMJ?

I've just found a few reviews of the Monarch/Brown Bear .308 Win - 145gr FMJ steel cased rounds that show they are capable of 1MOA and they are very cheap in the US. Brown Bear is price at around 35 cents a round and Monarch (repackaged Brown Bear) is around 50 cents a round. I would love to test some of this stuff out.

This was my result with the Norinco '96 production out of a T/C 308:

Not quite 1-MOA but for $0.53/rd, even if you took the bullet out of the case, bought some Hornady or whatever pills to stuff on top I bet with some tweaking you'd see sub MOA out of your R-700 for less than $1/round.

For practice ammo though, it's hard to beat the Norinco x51.

Cheers!

My Weatherby vanguard likes the PMC bronze 147g FMJ's. Shoots a consistent 1.25 MOA, they are what i use for practice. My hunting handloads will shoot .75MOA.
