.308 ammo for deer hunting

Hi, I will receive my new .308 rifle and I whant to choice ammo for deer hunting, with my 30/30 I used the 170 grs silver tip but I never shoot a deer with a .308 and I need advise to choice the right bullet to got a good expension and a clean kill at 50 yards to 300 yards.
 
If your talking factory , its money, money, Federal premium, Winchester(the black box), and a bunch more.. if handloads , sierra gameking, hornady grandslam, barnes x,
Now you can talk to some hunters and they will say all modern bullets do very well on game, I gotta agree, but like sierra aloth, and they have a good selection. I would not worry to much about any of the more popular ammo makers, all work just great.
The range of 50-300 meters , no worries.

150's, 165's, or 180's.
They will all take deer.
Just remember that no two brands of factory fodder are the same. Test drive a few to see what YOUR rifle likes.
 
For deer with a .308, it's going to be very hard to beat Federal's new Fusion, it either a 150 or 165, and depending on where you buy them, the best part is that they only run about $25 a box. If your rifle shoots them well, I'd look no further.

I need to qualify this in that I've only seen one Fusion bullet recovered from game; a .243 95gr from a coastal Blacktail shot by a buddy, but it showed perfect expansion and retained close to 90% of it's weight. It's definitely made me want to try them out this hunting season.
 
I had a Remington M788 in .308 for 14 years, bought it in 1979, fantastic rifle. For a 5 year period i used to put a 1000 Canadian 7.62mm Ball through it each year. After 5 years it still gave groups of 1 1/4" at 100 yards.

I shot my bragging shot with a Remington M788 fitted with a Bushnel/Banner 4x scope fitted with a BDC. I was using Remington 150 grain Core Lokt. I was hunting on the prairies and only able to get within 450 yds. I got into the prone, snuggled up to the stock, dialed into 450 and gently squeezed. 6 pointer mulie buck, 1 shot, heart shot! He went straight down. I never started out hunting season unless I had fired a minimum of 200 rds in practice for that year.

If you have an opportunity , buy one, great guns, great ammo
 
Garand, I have a savage 16 fhsak .308 win in order, is a stainless rifle with a bigger barrel, a muzzle brake and a accutrigger. Dont worry I will shot a minimum of 500 ammo this summer to got the fealling of this new gun, I never go hunting with a gun if I dont have a lot of pratice with it. For the practice I will use the winchester usmc is cheap, for the hunting season I will shot 1 or 2 the box of the ammo I will use it just make sure the scope is sight for and make sure of the drop.
 
I loaded some 165gr Hornady Interbonds for a buddy. He swears by them (not at them). They fly good, you get decent velocity fron a .308 and they puinched through everything he shot with them.

Congrats for your new addition, .308win is a pleasant caliber to shoot and reload. It also is a very potent cartridge for deer up to moose size game (when combined with a premium bullet).;) .

Like many mentionned, there is lots of good bullets out there for .308cal. Nosler, Sierra, Barnes, Hornady, Speers and many others brand have bullets from 150gr to 180gr that will do the job on deer for 0-300yds but the real tests will have to be done at the range and see what your new toy likes to shoot.

In load more 165's for hunters in the .308 than any other bullet size, and most are Game kings, although I have akso used the very excellent Hornady .

The Game King seems to work perfectly in the .308 and '06 cases, with more than 90% i shot kills every year anywhere from 50 to 250 yards, and a couple over that.
Moose, deer , bears, the works....

I think if you want to shoot the Interbond bullets(150,165,180) in a .308, you will have to roll your own. The Interbond bullet is supposed to be excellent.
 
Buy a box each of several manufacturer's 150 and 165 gr. offerings, try them all at the bench rest to see what you rifle likes, buy a couple boxes of the accurate stuff for hunting, sight it in, then shoot up all the leftover test loads OFFHAND, SITTING and KNEELING. Way too many hunters only shoot off the bench when they practise ( if they practise!) Unless you notice drastically different point of impact with the different loads offf the bench, you won't notice 1-2" difference in POI when shooting offhand, but you will develop shooting skills that are more important than what ammo you use. Your'e good to go when you can hold nearly all your shots in an 8" circle offhand at 100M.
