The Norinco 7.62x51 is a great choice as mentioned above, we shoot it in my buddies M14/m305 all the time, luckily enough we have a retailer here that sells it from pretty much the same price as online.

Norinco is the cheapest. Most dealers will offer a discount when you buy it by the case (200 to 1000 rounds).
In the ammo forum (on CGN) there's a thread comparing all the .308 ammo price that gets updated sometimes. 1000rnd of MFS should be found around 5-600$. 1000rnd of PMC should be found around 8-900$. PMC bronze is probably the best you'll find under 1$ per round.
