.308 AR options?

Lazerus2000,
Try faster ammo. My DPMS seemed to favour the faster ammo over the standard velocity. 168 Federal Gold shot so so. Lapua 167 however shot extremely well.

do those r-25s accept the original ar-10 (either sudanese or portugese style) uppers?

WELLLLlllllllll,
the good news is that it ?probably? ?maybe? ?might? be possible to drop in an original AI built AR 10 upper on to the R25 lower.
BUT,
there is more to it than that.

The original AR 10 lowers had a bigger diameter buffer tube, buffer, and spring, and of course a bolt carrier that was LARGER IN DIAMETER at the rear.

I don't have an original AR 10 around to try it, but I don't think the original AR 10 bolt carrier would fit in to the smaller AR 15 diameter buffer tube and spring????

DPMS built AR 10 complete uppers in various configurations ARE available in the US at reasonable prices ....
so why would you want to use an OLD/ORIGINAL AR 10 upper???

PS to Epoxy ....
back in the day, I shot up a LOT of light [CQB/GAMER = 7.62X39 Russian equivalent = 2450 fps ] reloads out of my OLD original AR 10s, made up from 7.62 NATO brass, Win 748 ball powder, and 123 Gr FMJ Lapua .310 Diameter AK 47 bullets. These shot very well indeed in several of the old AR 10s. MOA was not uncommon.

I also had great groups from the old/discontinued Remington .308 Win Accelerators, which used a plastic sabot and a .223 bullet at about 4000 fps [ basically equivalent to a .22 -250 ]. Unfortunately, these groups were NOT any where near the POI of the regular 7.62 NATO loads.

As I said, the OLD AR 10s often shot as well or better with NATO spec ball ammo, as they did with 168 GR HPBT Match. This was NOT USUALLY the case with the M14s.

I am experimenting with reloading some 125 gr SP loads at approx 2450 FPS, and also some 110 gr loads at MAX velocity. I also have a couple of boxes of the old IMPERIAL PSP 110 gr .308 Win loads to try out.

To avoid all that messy reloading, I would dearly like to find a Canadian source for Hornady TAP .308 Win ammo ....
as if that is likely??

I do, as we have a number of the original AR10's.

The Bolt Carrier will not fit in any of the current design guns, although if the Hk417 was not a piston, it would likley fit, as their tail end is as large as the front.

What was the twist rate for the original AR-10?

With the DPMS LR-308 it's a 1:10 twist. Until I found out that it liked the faster ammo, I couldn't recommend this rifle. After shooting the Lapua out of it, I could recommend it.

My armalite has a 1:11.25 twist rate. It shoots the 168 Federal Gold at .5 moa for 5 rounds at 100 yards. I love that twist rate for .308.

WP - I like your style... ;)

Kevin B said, " .... we have a number of the original AR10's."

What types of original AR 10s have you got?

Have you shot any of the OLD/Original AR 10s???

How do they compare with the new style AR 10s you've handled???

I know that the old AR 10s had that super heavy bolt carrier and buffer, and as all that weight cycled, it felt like an old Browning auto five shotgun in recoil .....
it actually seemed to be pulling the muzzle down back in to place with each shot.

Let's just say if there was one of a variant, well we got it...
And many of common ones...

I've shot some of the old ones, they rock you I had attributed to the lightweight.

hey guys, sorry, but i didn't want to clutter up the forum by making another thread for this question:

Does the H&K MR 308 use milspec buffer tubes? Basically, i am wondering if i can install a magpul PRS stock on the gun.

Also, are there any other mags that are compatible with it? For example, can it take SR-25 mags?

Another range session with my R25.

I am still getting used to the JARD trigger,
and I still need a bipod and a better scope,
but,
the R25 does show some promise,
with three out of the eight factory loads tried today shooting sub-MOA.

What is interesting to me is that I got great groups with 110 GR AND 200 Gr SP loads.
I mean, you could expect tight groups from 168 GR Match ammo, but getting good groups from 110 gr and 200 gr factory SP hunting ammo as well, just shows the inherent accuracy and versatility of the .308 cartridge, and the AR 10 rotating bolt design.

This one is a keeper,
