308 Barrel With A 1 in 12 Twist Rate......

I tried another member's model 12 bench rest in 308 a couple of weeks ago. Its scoped with the Sightron 10-50.
For what its worth, I was very impressed with the feel of that platform for shooting off a bench. It handles great and shoots very well.

"...designed for up to 240 grainers..." You won't get a 240 grain bullet to work in any .308 Win. Way too long. Those are made for big, .30 cal. magnums. Sierra says they require at least 1 in 9 rifling too. Think 155ish grain match bullets.
However, 'I want one.' is reason enough.

What grain of bullets would be good to run through it?

I have a 1 in 10 right now and understand it is designed for up to 240 grainers.

Looking for an excuse to justify my third Savage rifle. Model 12 BR.

I doubt the 240s will stabilize in your 1:10. A 240 gr flat base RN Woodleigh will stabilize in a 1:10, but stretch the nose and the tail and you've added plenty of length to it. I think a 220 MK is about the limit for your 1:10 barrel, and a 210 is probably a better choice based on the information from Bryan Litz.

A proper answer to your question of bullet choice requires that we know what type of shooting do you intend to do. Heavy for caliber bullets are at their best in long range applications, but some pretty talented guys believe they have no advantage over 155s. There are few shooting situations where I would not pick the heaviest bullet that will stabilize in my rifle, but I choose fast twist barrels and I'm probably in the minority on the question of either rate of twist or bullet weight. With a 1:12 I'd look hard at a 175 gr MK.

they should- you only need a twist of 1/13.5 for a 180- look up the greenhill formula and that'll tell you what twist you need for what bullet- i just happen to know what it is for the 308/180 b/c i've quoted it so many times-the other caveat you have with the 308 and bullets over 180 grains is that in order to get the mag to fit, you have to seat the bullet's tail down IN the powder column- thus compressing the powder slightly-you're ok if you use a 308 in an 06 action, where bullet length doesn't matter- but if you're going to use an 06 action, why not use an 06?

I went with 168's in my TRG 1/12 and get 1/2 moa out of my reloads (keep in mind I am not a crack shot, not using a chrony, just started reloading and simply shooting off the bipod) I did so because Hornaday Tap's for the 1/12 are 168 gr and I figured their engineers and those that use this stuff know something I don't and just accept their knowledge. I am staying with 168 gr as for me the accuracy is excellent and the bullet can be used to hunt anything from antelope to moose to bear and it seems to be pretty easy to find a wide variety of match bullets and hunting bullets in that weight. also a lot of recipies on the web for that bullet weight. I push mine with 44.5 grains of Varget 26 inch barrel.

Thanx for this Warren.

I have a hodgepodge of bullets from 155s up to the 208 AMax. Berger, Sierra, Hornady, Chinchaga, Nosler. All target type rounds for shooting at 100 yards or out past 1,000 (someday)

My current Savage 308 is with the McMillan stock. Hope to use this for Tactical Response Precision Rifle course. It looks like a "sniper" rifle so I might just re classify it as a training rifle. The Model 12 BR will become my target rifle. And more importantly I want one.
