308 bolt face

Almost every "standard ones, means all those based on the 8X57 case.
They are so numerous.... Thisk of anything wich is based on the 30-06 (ex. .270 Win, .280 Rem, 35 Whelen and on and on), the .308 Win familly (ex. 7mm-08, .243 Win, .257 Robert, .300 Savage, .338 Federal,.358 Win, and on, and on) then you have the European cases such the 7X57, 8X57, 9X57, 9.3X57, 9.3X62...

You better narrow your question, if you have something in mind...

22-250, 22-250 AI, 220 Swift, 220 swift AI, 243, 243 AI, 22-243 Middlestead plus all the BR cartridges and on and on. How are your reloading skills like fire forming, neck turning and loading for a cartridge that has very little data? This should be a huge factor in building a full out wildcat or something a little more common.

As already mentioned there are many choices.

My favorite for a 308 short action boltface is 6.5-47Lapua, this is a deadly acurate cartridge, there is lots of loading data, barrel life is outstanding. I can get a 123gn bullet to 3000 fps with minimal recoil, it is easy to spot your own shots.
This cartridge can be loaded long to touch the lands, and still have a total COL less than 2.8, so you can load very accurate ammo in your mag.

The only downside is you have to reload.

some cartridges that got left out of the " same bolt face as a 308 list "

the whole family of rounds based on the 284 winchester case .

and the 6.5x55 , depending on which cases you measure , the rim is either the same diameter as the 308 , or just a few thou larger . either way it will work or can be very easily made to work .

As we read many posts, we learn that certain contributors are at the top of certain fields. Baribal is the top specification man, as he has CIP data not readily available.
Ganderite has more experience than anyone. 6.5X55SE is not the same specification cartridge head as .308 Win. if made as specified by CIP, but the poster is correct in staing that some American brass is close, which is under spec.

Peter

Many .308 Win rifles were/are NOT originally made with short actions but within the M/98standard box magazine dimensions- wich will take up to 3.350" OAL .... wich the US copied on their '03.
The OP must look at his rifle magazine to see what will fit.

As noted by Peter, European-made 6.5X55 may fit, but will sometimes be very tight, wich is not a good situation, especially in a hunting rifle and limits the make / type of brass you can use. That said, opening the bolt face a bit is usually not a problem.
