Anybody have any luck shooting 308 bullets out of a mosin? I tried an experiment using identical powder charges behind 308 150gr & 312 150 grn hornadys & got good groups with both. The 308 did hit 8" lower though. I tried this to see if it would help explain why my finn 91/30 shot 20" high, since the finns used 308 bullets in there ammo. The tightness of the groups surprised me, three touching with two flyers with the 308. Wan't expecting that out of a rifle with .310 grooves.

Didn't think the 123 gr would be any good for the 7.62X54r, it is a 7.62X39 bullet. How does it group and what game would you be expecting to take down with it? Just curious, I saw plenty of .310 in 123 - 125 gr range but didn't think to try it in my Nagants.

M-39s

Maybe the .310" bullets intended for 7,62x39 would make a good varmint bullet with a faster powder in M-39s. They usually have a ."310 bore compared to the .3095 of the late Tikkas and most of the Finn-rebarrelled M-91s.
All the Finn-captures have larger Russian standard bore diameters from .312" to .314".
All Mosins should be slugged, anyway. It is a good thing to do when you contemplate cast bullets as your regular plinking diet. A good, correctly-sized lead bullet, with or without gas-check, can be really accurate and cost next to nothing.

Yeah, we have been running some tests around here, using a 1944 Izhevsk 91/30, a 1939 91/30, a 1907 Sestroryetsk 91, a Dragoon......

what we have found is this:

whatever group your rifle will shoot with the "recommended" .308 bullet...... will be cut in HALF when you switch to a .312" projectile. Just maybe the Russians knew what they were doing when they sized their slugs .310-.311", huh?

I take down paper...

From the bench I can get ten shots consistantly in a 5 inch circle.

I loaded them up to hit the center of a 8" bull at 100 yards.

I also slugged my bore it is 0.304 grove 0.312 land and the grove is 2 mm wide.

I'm thinking of trying some 32 pistol bullets next. They are 0.312".

For game I use 150 g Hornady SP and my Enfield.
