I have a Norinco M14 s it says win 308 on it... Can I use nato 7.62 mil surplus ammo safely? I have looked all over for this info please clear this up for me.

and us Newbies

thanks

In general I suggest you only shoot Surplus through a Norc, at least until you can have your headspace checked.

Some are a little long for .308, but I have never had one in my hands that was too long for 7.62

on that note woulddn't a USGI bolt be headspaced for 762 NATO as well so by putting a USGI bolt in a Norinco you aren't really doing much to help you shoot 308?

IMHO, it appears that the Norinco bolts are causing the large headspace, although still within tolerance for 7.62NATO chamber dimensions. A USGI bolt will tighten up the headspace almost always :D

How do I check for headspace? I thought I read somewhere that I have to shoot a few rounds first and then measure something on the casing right?

Please, excuse my ignorance on this matter...

Sorry I read your post wrong.....you are shooting the surplus...........you 'should' be fine. I wouldn't fire the .308 in there without checking the HS.

Thousands of rounds through various Norcs and POlys, surplus was not an issue.

Shoot a few rounds and send them off to Hungry and he'll mic them for you.....I think he still does that.

You would need the proper gauges for checking.

I personally have no worries about the Chi-com M14 types
