If one were to build a 308 Win heavy barrel rifle for target use is there any special chamber configuration one should use?...do most guys go to a tight neck and a shorter throat on the "tactical" style 308 rigs?...seems like most Rem 700 heavy barrel 308's shoot pretty darn well as they are but is there room for improvement in the chamber?..what about throating?...
I'm thinking of putting one together and I'm wondering if I should just order a regular SAAMI spec reamer...or something "special"...?

A tight neck is not a necessity but I would sure recommend a short throat so as it wears you can always seat the bullet close to the lands for best accuracy until it is really burnt out.

If you think factory :) 700 BDLs shoot great, wait until you install a custom barrel...

The only 308 that I know which reamer was used is the clymer M852. This is a very nice profile. Necks dimension is not overly large but factory ammo will chamber. The throat is quite short with a nice throat angle orig designed for the 168MK.

Would handle 175gr and 155gr Scenar well. A long tapering throat handles these long VLD type bullets better then an abrupt leade.

There at least a dozen reamers. Visit clymer, Dan Manson, PTG and other sites. Many will list dimensions for you to study.

I would choose one that doesn't have a very tight neck dimension but be tight on the rear case dimension (473 to 474"). If you need to shoot supplied ammo, go min spec all around. If you are loading, go max spec all around.

Enjoy...

Rick,
I mostly use an Obermeyer spec reamer. It's quite short throated and works very well with the 155's. The short throat seems to elevate pressures a bit too much with Lake City match and in the barrel I have for use with bullets of 168gr and over, I extended the throat. Lake City was then OK and shot better too. I got the reamer fromPTG (Kiff). Regards, Bill.

I had Dave Kiff (Pacific tool and gauge)make me up a reamer that matches the 175grn federal match ammo, mimium sammi spec. Shoot fantasic. One rifle shot a .6 group at 300M with the factory 168 federal ammo.

Dave kiff makes a reamer called the 95 palma team reamer. I bought one based on the high reccomendations of the US Palma shooters. Its a tight neck reamer that has been used by 100's of Palma shooters.

I like Obermeyer chambers for the .308. I also have a 7.62mm Canadian RG chamber. Any ammo made to fit the Obermeyers will fit the RG chamber, but not the other way around.

Try to track down a Palma size of reamer. Some 308 Match reamers are so tight you will have trouble finding a FL die that is small enough.

This is the reamer I use for my 308's, it is available from JGS and is called the 308 Palma. You can use factory ammo with it. For handloaders the throating is perfest, It will allow you to seat the 168 SMK bullet to just touch the rifling and still work through the mag box, OAL will be around the 2.790" mark, it works perfectly and is a huge advantage when feeding through the mag. It has been used very succesfully by alot of shooters, second choice is the Obermyer chamber also by JGS reamers.
