Hello fellow nutz,
Ive got a bit of a custom build that should be done tomorrow and was looking for suggestions on dies. Im going to be running a trued 700 receiver with a 30 cal lilja barrel chambered in 308 using an oybermyer reamer. With my 700 police I used a lee neck die and seating die and was happy with the half moa groups. I have about 200 once fired lapua brass that I want to size for the new chamber and wanted opinions on dies. How do people find the hornady custom dies? I can pick up a set of those for a very good price along with the standard RCBS. Pros and cons? Any other suggestions? I was thinkin of using some quality gear but on the other hand didnt want to spend $300 on a set of precision dies. Thanks for any suggestions.
 
Lee collet neck die, Redding body die, Forster or Redding inline seater.

Or bushing neck die. Forster makes a bushing/bump die that does the job of two dies. Feedback has been very positive.

Redding makes a super Type S sizer that is ubber popular with match shooters.

Quality accurate scale and use quality bullets.

Big smiles each time you pull the trigger.


As to using the old brass in the new chamber, that is a big depends. If the factory chamber is substantially bigger then the new one, you will have issues especially when using Lapua brass - very hard brass and you cannot anneal the body to soften.

All brass takes a set after several high pressure firings. Sizing force can be very high and the brass may become brittle after this process leading to separation on your next firing.

Unless you have similarly sized reamers, new barrel, new brass or at least 1F from a similar sized chamber. For what you have invested, this is a very small cost.

I have some Win brass that will shoot great, inexpensive and higher case volume then the Lapua. Takes a beating too

having to deal with case separation is a serious irritant when you should be drilling bullets into the same bughole.
