Well I have finally got something to work with.

I've been trying to find somethign that will shoot in my Win 70 Heavy barrel

I started with a few 150grn reloads and it would not group under 5". I was shocked so I tried factory loads. Same problem

So in dismay I got a bunch of milsurp I had and started shooting, well I had some 147grn and some 168grn and 174grn and I suddenly noticed that the 174grn were giving a much better group then the 147grn. So I loaded up a few 180grn just to see and wow its a 2.5" group, thats an improvement still ####. Well before hunting season I loaded up a batch with 200grn slugs 35 - 40grn IMR 4350. But with hunting season I didn't get out to the range again till last weekend.

Huge improvement 5 round groups with 3 of the 5 touching lets say about 1.5" groups. I'll have to shoot from a bench and use proper targets next time, I was just shooting off the hood of the truck at an old election sign. No presure signs with the 40grn loads, but it appears that I have a little burr in the chamber that is leaving a mark on all the cases and makes the bolt hard to close. Bullets were seated over max lenght but still 0.030" before the lands so its a long throat.

But at last I have a starting point for this rifle, I guess at 200grns there are no factory loads available. I may even try a batch of 220grn someday.

I recommend you try Sierra 168 BTHPM or 165 BTHP --the latter is a deer bullet--- with 42 grs of Varget and CCI BR primers. Both shoot 1/2" MOA in my Remingtons

some rifles just plain like certain slugs and that's it - my savage 99 likes the 180 far better than the 150 grain stuff- and i only use ww-748 with magnum primers

Let's get with the program!

Gentlemen:

The hot ticket for most of the shooters here is this combination:

175 Sierra Match King, 45.0 Hodgdon's Varget, Federal 210M Primer, Winchester Brass.

If you use your 174 and back off 2 grains and work up you might find a real jewel. Consistent ignition of the F210M primer is a real plus. Results are 100 yard 5 shot groups like this:

arctictarget.jpg

Assumes clean barrel with fowling shots and properly bedded stock.

We are getting to the point if we don't hit a 1/4" inch dot with the cold bore shot at 100 yards, it's a miss.

Lets get with the program up there. :D

yes they are loaded up to max according to my reloading manual but I worked up to 40 grn from 35 watching for preasure sign and all the rounds are good no problems.

Gun just dosn't seem to like light slugs so going to 165 or 180 grn is not going ot help much. I don't know what the twist rate is, but I will have to sit down now and get serious with that rifle. I've got 3 weeks off for Christmas so I'll have some time to go to the range.

When I first read the post I thought "wow, .5 inch groups, what's the problem?" Then re-read and saw 5 inch groups, now I can see why you are upset.
First thing I would do in clean the barrel. Then I would remove the action from the stock and make sure it is clean and dry. Check to make sure the bedding screws do not bottom out before the action is tight in the stock.
Milsurp ammo would be accurate if under 3 MOA so try some good handloads.
Target rifle shooters are having luck the Varget, 155 SMK's, Fed 210M(match not magnum) primers. Start with about 44 gr and work up.

5 inch groups sounds like there's more like something loose - you can't go heavier than 180 grain in 308 as you get penetration into the powder unless you have a longer than standard mag or action - cil used to make a 200 psp but brother did that thing kick- and i remember the cases were unusable afterwards- maybe get a good smith to take a look at it- there's a few good ones in edmonton

it also sounds like you've got a newer manual with those darned "pussy " loads in it- my speer #11 lists imr 4350 for a start load of 42 grains and a top load of 44 grains for a 200 grain slug-seems like every edition the manufacturers or the editors sneak the top and bottom loads down a few grains hoping nobody will notice- well i can tell you that 40 grains of ww748 with a 180 ( yea, i know it's too heavy) will not give enough gas to make an m14 function- you need at least 42- top end of 44- i got this from an awful lot of work- 20 loads of each with .5 grain separation and a real m14, not a 305

Just sitting down to make up another batch of 200grn using some sierra spitzer boattails. I have a lot of IMR4895 so thats the one I'm going to use. I'll make up another series of loads and see where (if) I get any over pressure signs. I'll be shooting the saturday and again on Christmas Day (going out to the farm for Christmas dinner and we have a little range, 400yds)
