An old timer in town wants to know if I could find him a missing "insert" piece for his Garand. He says it goes in front of the shells in the mag well. Any idea where a person might look for one?

Insert not really needed, but....

If one is self-organized enough, not to mix up 308 and 30-06 in en-bloc clips as well, the insert is not required with a properly funtioning, 308 Garand.

But for some-one who is going to loan his rifle to someone unfamiliar with this rifle, I can see it's needed for safety reasons alone.

The space is to help prevent the 308 rounds from slipping/creeping forward in the enbloc while firing.

It’s not a safety issue, as the 30-06 will not go into a 308 win chamber as it’s too long for the bolt to close. Remembering also the 308 shoulder/case dimensions are larger than the 30-06 body dimensions and will not close as well.

I guess I confused a safety issue, with a jamming issue.

I have a 308 Garand, and I always shoot it without the insert.
No problems here to speak of, at all.

Thanks for the comments guys. I'll tell him that other users shoot their rifles without the piece, but that if he is still concerned he can get one through mail order. Thanks again.
