Take a look at Marlin XS7 too. I used to own a XL7 in 30-06 with a VX1 on it. At around $650 (rifle+scope), it was an awesome eatery level hunting rig.
That said, I have only heard good things about Howa 1500/Weatherby Vanguard rifles.

I have a Winchester Mod 70 (post 64) that I got dialed in over the weekend to 220 meters; tight grouping, solid and firm rifle overall that cycles very smoothly.
One note i will say - anyone that says that a second shot is never a consideration while hunting, i ask - what about when the hunter becomes the hunted? I know I want more than just a second shot at that point.
