I'm totally new to reloading so bear with me. I bough the RCBS rock chucker kit then I got some brand new RCBS 308 and 223 dies. I mounted the press put the deprimig/resizig die on and then a 308 brass. It was very hard to pull the handle it actually got stuck??? I tried another brass the same effect. I tried 223 dies and it deprimed/resized with very little effort. What is wrong with the 308 is the die screwed? Thanks in advance

Paul

Are the cases properly lubed? .308 can take a bit more effort to size than a .223, particularly if the cases were fired in a military rifle, but a Rockchucker is a powerful press, and should handle the job easily.

I think you need to read and heed all the warnings about not lubing the cases properly.
Also, check if the decapping rod doesn't stick out a wee bit too much and the neck expander isn't actually striking the bottom of the case before full engagement is reached.
PP.

If you hear any squeaking during resizing, it is usually an indication of insufficient lube as has been noted above.

Reloading seems simple but there are lots of little things that can go wrong. Back to the manuals and instructions.

My hornady dies in .308 are extreemly hard to resize for some reason to. 30-06, 270, 7.62X54R takes not even half the effort. The only thing I can think of that its a 'small base' die? Or that the brass is thicker than the other ones that I reload? I realy hate it, its realy pissing me off.

it also depends on the BRAND of brass you're trying to resize- i doubt if your dies are hatched- i;ve found winchester to be the easiest, and the rest are not so bad when properly lubed- the absolute worst were IVI 7.62 from about 77 - they went into the die ok, but coming out, pulled the rim off the casing- then had to unscrew the locknut and beat on the depriming rod with a hammer to free the die- now i just shoot the ivi stuff and throw it away- since i'm running m14s, i only get 4 resizes anyway if i'm lucky

I've got the same problem. Rockchucker supreme, hornady dies. I find some brass *particularly* difficult, and I've tried adjust the die all over the place.

And yes, cases are properly (lightly) lubed, even with a quick swipe of lube inside the case mouth.

R-P cases are basically impossible to size, Normas hard but not impossible, Winchester brass fairly easy.

Maybe they are tight dies?

Thanks for the replys. I hope my Dies are not screwed already as they are brand new. The brass is the milsurp brass (70's portugese the Ingman is selling) I have some federal bras that I'm going to try next. Yes the brass was lubed properly.

Or berdan ;)

Make sure your brass is clean & lubed, and try polishing your dies up as well. I had this problem initially with a new set of Dillon 308 dies - I just used a little more lube than I normally do, and polished up the die - now it's like buttah

I've never seen Portuguese 7.62 that wasn't Berdan primed. Have heard reports that Igman flash holes may be on the small side.

Sounds like a lack of lube... I forgot to lube once and it was tough as hell to get it to work (snicker snicker)

Go buy a lube pad and some lube.. they work great, just roll the cartridges on the pad soaked with lube (like a stamp pad)

Edit, oh it was lubed properly.. there go my comments wasted. lol
