.308 Help Deciding?

Dude, buy a Remington 700 SPS Varmint and upgrade the stock/barrel/trigger when funds allow even if the end result is custom everything but the action. You will have a badass rifle. The SPS Varmint does not have the detachable magazine, however, you can get a detachable magazine kit from Badger Ordinance I believe so either way you'll be good to go when your rifle is finished.

Depends on what kinda fun you wanna have, a heavy bolt gun will find you on the bench or in the dirt.
A semi will allow good accuracy, and some off hand fun, as well as bench work.
So you gotta work that question out.
As far as dollars go, spend less on gun , more on ammo when learning this game.:D a matte finished remmy , no need to get the cop gun, bling will be the same at 10 ft.;)

Thanks for the knowledgable replies. Its a shame to hear everyone hates the stock on the 700, is it that bad? What does a free floating barrel mean? And if its not a detachable mag does that mean u can load a few in the body and they will feed as u shoot? Sry I dont have much XP behind a bolt action.

I am hoping to be shooting around 300 yds +, what type of scope should one get for this task? How much would one cost? And one more question what do the numbers mean like 3-10 x 40 etc

Whit my rem varmint I have no problem killing my target at 300M (bipod, Leopold base and ring) Free floating barrel mean that the barrel touch nothing he his not restricted when he wipe (barrel move a bit when fired) you won't see that, that mean more accuracy.

Yes you can have 4 rounds in the internal magazine + 1 in the chamber for a grand total of 5. If you want to do target shooting it does not Mather, the first one his the one that count.

The stock his crap, but if you are new, it does not Mather, you will pay at least 200$ for an other rifle whit a stock a bit bather, but in the end you will probably change that :) so save the money get a 700 varmint in .308

If you really want to have a free floating barrel whit the riffle go whit the savage 10 FP, stock his not really bather, but it's free floating.

Scope number the first 2 are the magnification meaning that it goes from 3 to 10X the last number his the size of the lens the bigger it his more light will come in.

If you want I can take some pic of mine and show them to you this weekend

Pick up a copy of "The accurate rifle". This will explain all the components and why they are important.

A buddy of mine gave me a copy when I first became interested in rifles. It was worth reading.

Most factory guns shoot about the same overall. Each manufacturer has good and bad. I think accuracy consistently favours Tikka, but buy based on what you like. Don't get BS'd into believing more money means a better gun.

Hey guys. Im looking to buy a .308 bolt action rifle preferably in Black! What would you guys recommend? I seem to like the Remingtons, more accurately the model 700. There is also the police version which looks awesome. What would you guys recommend that shoots nice and is fairly good price?

Spend a couple hundred mpre and get and rem 700p that way you have a decent stock to start with and spend a little extra and get te trigger woked over. Then shoot the crap out of it
