Yesterday I tried a new load in my 308 , it went pretty good .
Lapua brass neck sized, 155gr lapua bullets, Fed match primers and 45grs of IMR 4895 OAL 2.83". The first 4 bullets went into .4500 - .308 = .142" group....Then I pulled the 5th one left:mad: you know , the shot, you know as soon you pull the trigger that you just screwed up, ever before you look in the scope:redface:The fifth shot opened the group to .75". I really have work on my trigger release...again!!! I had good results with Varget also the other day but this is better.
P.S. my rifle is a Savage 10FP-LE2B;)

Nice shooting. 155 Lapua bullets really start to shine out past 600 yards. I used IMR 4895 for years but found it to be a little on the dirty side. I really didn't know any better until I switched over to Varget, which I find to be very clean burning.
I use 46 gr in a Lapua case with 210 Match primers. With my 30 inch barrel I get 2940-2950 fps with a moly coated bullet.

I'm using 45.0 gr. RL15 with 155 Scenars at 2.865". Shoots great out of my TRG at 0.5 MOA and gives me 2800 fps. I recently bought 1000 Lapua brass and loaded all of them to this recipe. Once all the brass is once fired I'll play with powder level and overall length to get it to 2900 fps.

I load 45 grains of varget and just chronoed them at 2850ish. The spread from lowest to highest was 12 FPS over 5 rounds.

Norma cases, fed primer 155 lapua 2.828 on the lands.

I think I'm going to start working it up to around 46, as I'd like to get at least 2900.

Stevens 200 with a 10FP barrel.

Measuring the velocity of just (5) rounds is not statistically relevant. Try shooting 20-25 rounds with a chronograph and tell us what it is. Then you'll have potentially useful data.

Hey im using 155smk imr4895 and win primers and dropping them in at 2.775 is that a yeah or neah???

Well 2.8" is the standard OAL for 308. Many guys seem to get better accuracy by going longer towards the lands.

2.775 will work though.

In reloading, there are no right answers. Whatever shoots in your rifle safely is the right answer.

That's true.

My Rem700 has a leade of 2.935" and the best accuracy came from 0.020" off the lands AND 2.80" OAL, so I just load to 2.80" OAL.

155 at 2.775

Thanks the reason I went with 2.775 is that is what the chart has said for 155smk hpbt palma. but if i go longer thats ok??

thanks,

thanks,

My OAL with 155 SMK's is 2.800". I've had no probalems. I've never heard of a .308 that had a problem with rounds up to 2.800" OAL.

Make your ammo much over 2.800" and all bets are off. If you want to get fancy you can measure the distance to the lands and load closer to them.

I use 2.800" and my rifle shoots under 1 MOA all day. Usual groups are around .5 - .7".

Fine bullets those 155 grain match bullets. Palma Match shooters are required to use 'em with iron sights out to 1,000 yards.

46 varget is the load I use also, shooting a rem 700P I actually see an increase in group size if OAL exceeds 2.800, so I just stay at that length...

Today I shot a 600 yard match with 155 VLD Bergers(two, 20 shot relays) and I also shot 155 SMK's for one relay (20 shots) The OAL of the Bergers is 2.925" the SMK's OAL is 2.875". This is a new barrel with an Obermeyer chamber and is a single shot bolt gun so there is no worry about mag length. Bullets are seated out to touch the lands. I found no advantage of the VLD over SMK's bullets at 600 yards. The VLD bullets start to show off at long range.

As I was logging on to CGN, Canada Post brought me my order from Hirsch Precision : Lapua 167 & 185 Scenar bullets. :D
Over the weekend I picked up some N150 ,IMR4895 and IMR4064, so I'm all set to test these bullets versus the 155 Scenar

X2 in a Palma chamber. Can't get them longer than 2.800" :)

Totally agree.

I've heard 20FPS is a pretty good ES, and I expect if I did shoot 20-25 over the chrono, that's likely where it would end up.

However, I intend to spend my time shooting at long range in the wind. I figure that will be time better spent.

:D
