I recently picked up a Norinco M14. I am debating keeping it or not, my intentions are to hunt for coyote and do a bit of target.

I am wondering if the accuracy of this gun can or will be enough. I don't mind putting a scope on it. Most shots would be 200-350 yds.

I want to save the pelt too. Is there anything in 308 that is suitable? is 150grain way too much?

Just looking for advice, I have only hunted turkey.

308 is not a fir friendly yote round.... if you already have the rifel why not try out the accuracy and answer your own question?

I am not sure that keep the pelt and .308 go together very well. :) I would consider something along the lines of .223 or 22-250 before the .308 if you want to keep the pelts.

Reason I am asking about accuracy is I'm trying to learn from others experience before putting 5-600$ worth of mount and scope on it. If it's hopeless, I don't want to waste the time and money, I'll just trade it in or sell it.

As far as 308 went, I thought maybe there is a lighter load that would work, I am not into reloading, I can't make my own.

From what I researched it looks like I'll get another rifle, I wanted to see suggestions from more experienced guys.

I looked at the 22-250, there is a nice heavy barrel left hand 700sps at the Sail store here. I was warned about the barrel life but I don't think I will ever got through it. I am also considering 223, 243 and others. I liked the idea of 243 because it might be a bit more versatile, if I decide to go for bigger game it might be suitable. Price of ammo is also a factor when it comes to target fun.

Vario, I have shot coyotes using my .270 with hand loaded 110gr VMAX bullets. Chrono'd velocity 3200+ fps. Single entry wounds with NO exit wound. I believe there is a .30 cal VMAX bullet. You would have to hand load to make them. Don't believe they are available in factory .308 rounds. The only other way to save the pelt is to use fmj's if they are legal/safe to use in your hunting area. I don't like to use fmj's because of the ricochet potential.

I wouldn't buy one to hunt coyotes at 200-350 yards. Yes, you can hit them at that distance, but shot placement will be inconsistent. If I were you I would buy a 223 rem bolt gun for coyote hunting and target shooting. A $400 Savage will be twice as accurate as the M14, and without any tinkering.
