.308 Marlin...picking up steam?

They are out.
I've been looking at those as well... Seem pretty nice they pack more punch than the 308. Would be a good bear gun without going to a 45-70 which cuts your range quite a bit. The 308 shoots a bit flatter with less drop tho, depending on what you need it for, the 338 is still pretty nice

for a first gun you can't beat a springfield trapdoor, unless it's a muzzleloader- by the time you figure out how to load and fire the thing, you're qualified to do just about everything short of the m1919a4

Well first, the 88 is a bolt gun, that just happens to use a lever. I really don't consider it a true lever like the others and sure not the king.

I own both a 99 and BLR. And I have developed a hate for both, but the 99 is a far better made gun.

If the 88 isn't a lever the BLR sure as hell isn't.

And the 99 is uglier than sin :(

to the contrary, the 99 is a sleek and elegant rifle, no projecting hammer or mag to get caught on stuff and no undermounted tube- you want to see ugly look at the win95- there used to be quite a market for embellishing 99s- thumbhole stocks, scrollwork, gold inlays ,etc- you could get a custom all done up like a tiffany's revolver-

I have a BLR 308, I hate it, but it qualifies. The short action BLR is a very fine hunter, if you can handle the trigger (I can't) and I was really referring to them.

I'll agree with you though on these long actions and magnum BLR's with the long barrels. I see no point to them, way better options than the BLR in those chamberings.

Some 99's are fine looking rifles, mine is not. BUT, I have around 15 guns give or take. NONE are as balanced!!!!!! Not even close. I find the balance so impressive every time I pick it up.

I thought you were calling the 88 not a lever because of mechanics, and the BLR is about as non-traditional as levers get.

I really like my BLR's for hunting, but I quite don't like most bolts. I agree that the long action BLR's are about the clunkiest things out there.

Maybe I should buy a 99 and try to learn to like one. Functionally they're great but they look like a bloated pig to my eye.

I have bolt rifles. What I want is another traditional, tube-fed, exposed hammer lever rifle, something a bit more powerful than my .30-30's and able to take a scope. I have had Savage 99's and I've tried the BLR. Not interested. I love those Marlin levers.
Plus I like trying something not everyone uses, hence my dalliances with the .280 Remington, .250 Savage, .257 Roberts, .30-30 Ackley and so forth.
So no bolt, pump, auto, single, or alternate cartridge suggestions please. Just .308 Marlin info.

Like you said - a 30-30AI clone, performance wise. What else is there to say? There's nothing wrong with the old 30-30, and the .308 marlin has somewhat better ballistics. I doubt it will be very attractive to most folks, but being different is it's own reward at times. Go for it.
