Ok, I have what may be a very dumb question; but I have to ask, so here goes...

I was wondering if a .308 muzzle brake (from a Tikka T3 Tactical) could be installed and actually work on a 6.5x55 rifle (Tikka T3 Varmint)? Would there be any danger caused? Would the brake actually do "its job"? Thank you in advance for any help.

There wouldn't be any danger, as long as the brake was installed properly. As far as working as a brake, I doubt it would work well. The tolerance at the end of the muzzle has to be very close, so that the gases are deflected back, through the ports, when the bullet is going through.

I had a muzzle brake on a 338-06 that caused me a bit of trouble. The internal face of the brake, started to fret, from the hot gasses causing the internal face to flow. It actually created enough of a lip that it effected accuracy. I took it off and cleaned it up an all was well. It was a home made brake, made up by a good friend, out of mild steel. With proper 4140C, that may not have happened. It certainly hasn't happened on any other brakes I have.
One other problem associated with brakes, can be powder fouling build up around the exit and in the ports. For some reason, this stuff can be quite difficult to remove.

It should work, just not as well as one made for that specific caliber. AFAIK, the Sako (Tikka) brakes are one size fits all, the one you use for .300wm is the same one for .223.

It's funny you should reply as you might know the person I am considering buying the brake from ;)

I appreciate the input though; thanks to both who replied.

No Problem, if installed properly, you 308 muzzle break will work fine in 6.5X55SM.
You have to ask you gunsmith if he can thread metric, because the thread patern are M18X1.

The difference in hole diameter is negligible, its still far easier for the gas to expand and escape out the sides of the break than to go through the hole. My 308 FTE works great on my 6mm AI.
