I'm new to reloading and I've been following advice from a few guys here and other reloaders I know from work....I've recently reloaded some rounds for my Norma Mag and I was following my reloading manual (an older pacific press) and it said if the bullet has a canalure then crimping should be used so I proceeded to do so. Since then, most of the guys I've talked to said they never crimp....canalure or not. I haven't fired these rounds yet.....Opinions appreciated!

TRy it and see. Some people report accuracy gains when using crimps. There's an article on accuratereloading.com somwhere.

Although I'll admit I only crimp when I can't seat the bullet to the lands for my bolt guns. I always crimp for the levers

Owned and shot and loaded for several 308 Norma Mags over the years. Never crimped any round I loaded, and never had a problem. The Norma round tends to be very accurate without the crimp, so I would not be bothering. Regards, Eagleye.

Well it seems the majority do not crimp....however as I have 15 rounds already done, and not all guns are created equal, I'll fire them off and also do replica non crimped loads and see if there's anything to be gained. Incidently, I loaded 5 rds ea @ 69, 70 & 71 grs H4831sc with 180 Hornady Spire Points.
This would be a good time to have a chrony......

I have a .308 Norma Mag, Schultz & Larsen, have never crimped for it & will probably never do so. I've never experienced the need. For most rifle cartridges up to about .375 H&H I don't crimp but for that cal & bigger, definately. For my lever guns with tube magazines, always. All handgun loads, revolver that is, yes.
