I inherited a rifle in 308 Norma Mag from my father. He had it custom built for him back in the early ‘70s. I’ve put some rounds through it but I’m not a hunter so am considering getting rid of it. It’s built on a Mauser action with a 1:10 Douglas barrel. I had ATRS put a muzzle brake on it since I got it. It’s very nice shape and very accurate. Any ideas what this would be worth? I have a friend who’s interested but I’m not sure what to price it at. Thanks.

Hard to say without more information. Are we talking about an old FN98, Santa Barabara, a old M17/P17? What does the wood look like? The bore? etc etc.

Could be worth $500, could be worth many times that.

Here are some pictures for those who were asking. Bore is mint and shiny.

Not keen on the brake, but well done as far as the rifle is concerned.

Any idea what it weighs?
Looks like a heavier barrel than usual.

Barrel length without the brake attached?

Hard to say, the wood looks good and so does the metal work, the brake is a turn off for me. Always hard to put a value, I would say maybe $1000-1400 depending on action origine, maybe if you know of the smith that made the work, the barrel does look like a heavier profile than what we usually find on a hunting rifle.

It's a very heavy rig for hunting... I would cut and crown the barrel at 24 inches and try for $1000...

Had a Parker Hale Super Safari model that looked very much like that, minus the brake. My first 308NM, 'til I replaced it with the Schultz & Larsen in 308NM I have now.

The 308 Norma Magnum is my favorite 30 cal magnum. That being said, I am not in the market to buy a 3rd one.
Looks like a Santa Barbara Commercial mauser action. Looks like pretty decent lumber as well. I would say $800
to $1000. Regards, Dave.

Picture of the 308 Norma Mag that Bill Leeper built for me. Deadly accurate, super effective on bigger game.

Nice looking rifle, built on a decent action. Maybe worth $1000 if you can find a buyer. But I'd personally get rid of the brake and recrown the muzzle so it looks original.

I still have one (the PH I mean). Stock is different at the butt end, so I think the one pictured has had an aftermarket stock fitted. looks like a good job of it. Value? Maybe 1k. - dan
