308 Norma Mag

Get a bag of 300 Win mag .FL size them lubing shy of the the shoulder to prevent oil dents and inside case neck.Trim and fireform. My FN shot under MOA while fireforming.........Harold

I have over 100 new brass and many more once fired brass I also have RCBS dies but I also have a rifle in 308NM so none of it is for sale... :p

:D

If you are going to rechamber, why not go to .300 Win Mag? The superiority of the .308 NM is mythical. Anything the Norma can do, the Win Mag can do as well. Plus, you can buy ammunition and brass is readily available.

You will have a hard time trying to convince a 308 Norma fan that he should switch. The 308 Norma Mag & the 300 Win Mag are ballistic twins. The only advantage the 308 NM has is the slightly longer neck, and the fact that it fits magazines on the short side slightly better.
The ammo/brass is a non-issue for a handloader, which anyone who shoots a lot out of a big 30 should be anyway. I own several big 30's, and shoot them regularly out to 600 yards.
One thing that shooters should be aware of is that some 300 Win Mag factory ammo is loaded on the wimpy side. I chronographed a lot of 180 grain 300 ammo that averaged 2825 fps. This is 30-06 territory, and can be improved on considerably, since the real practical velocity for both chamberings with a 24" barrel is around 3150 fps. Regards, Eagleye.

I know that feeling. I probably have a dozen boxes and it still makes my heart beat a little faster everytime I come across more. Even more so with the 358 NM. I think I'm an addict. - dan

You and me both. I wanted the big three items of co-operation between Schultz & Larsen and Norma, and In Schultz & Larsen rifles. the 7x61 S&H, 308 NM and the 358 NM. I did get the 7x61 S&H in a model 68DL, the 308 NM in a 65DL but I was having difficulty locating a 358 NM in a Schultz. I had turned down a few 358 NM's in other brands but I weakened when Why not? offered to sell me a very nice Husqvarna model 1651 in 358 NM:D. No regrets, but eventually I'd still like to acquire that caliber in a Schultz.

In anticipation of eventually getting a 358 NM I managed to pick up seven boxes of 250gr Norma factory ammo at local gun shows. When I purchased the Husqvarna, along with it I got a couple of boxes of once fired. A short while later I purchased 100 new unprimed Norma brass from Henry Nierychlo on this site. I'm good to go for quite a while now but I know if I see any more, I'll likely get that to.

Oh, by the way, what do you have for a rifle in 358 NM?

Mine started life as a custom Mauser 98. Winchester style sideways safety and bolt handle, 24" Douglas barrel, Leupold mounts, it's worn three different stocks over the years. I'd like to put some nicer wood on it this year, so I've been keeping an eye out. It doesn't get as much shooting time as it should anymore, but eventually you reach a point where it takes you a year to cycle through and shoot the ones you have (and the boomers don't get used that much anyway). Time to cull the herd I think. - dan
