.308 or 30.06 ?

Hello all, I am new to this forum, so thank you for having me. I am not totally new to guns, as I already have a Parker Hail -06, BUT I am looking at getting a good used -06 for my 13yr old son.. used because I do not like the "new" packages of guns that come with only plastic magazines. Anyway..

Here's my question: I am looking to buy a used Savage Model 110, bolt action, comes with a Bushnell Elite 4200 Scope 3x9x40.... Only thing is.. It does not come with ANY Mag! Or even a drop plate!!! But, it still will top load 4 rounds +1!? Weird, haven't seen or even heard anything good or bad about that kind of gun.

Soo, can anyone here PLEASE inform me IF this is or can be a good gun, a bad gun, dud, too pricy, run away from it, or get it as fast as I can and run lol. Any expertise in this would be greatly appreciated as I am traveling 2 hrs to go see it tomorrow morning. It is one of the only used guns around I can find in a -06.

Btw- asking price is $300.00 <-- good or bad guys?

Thanks for all the help you can give a guy.

Edit: Oops, I'm half asleep and missed where you actually bought the Savage....All the Best:)

While I have owned several 308 rifles over the years, I have always favored the venerable 30-06.

My experience with the 30-06 leads me to conclude that, for hunting, it has a small, but noticeable advantage over the 308.

I usually expect 2850 fps with a 180 grain bullet in a 24" barrel with the 30-06, 2700+ with the 200 grainer.

As has been so eloquently stated, factory ammo does not reflect the potential of the 30-06, whereas the factory 308 stuff is loaded right up to potential.

However, for the reloader, the 30-06 is a cartridge just waiting to be loaded properly, and with all the great powders available today, it is better than ever!

The recoil factor? Possibly for a newer shooter, but I have not perceived punishing recoil from any 30-06 rifle that weighed over 5½ lbs.

Accuracy spread between the 2? The 308 may have a slight edge here, but for the game field, not enough to ever make a practical difference.

Buy the 30-06.....you will never regret it.

Regards, Dave.

For hunting? 30-06. The ammo cost will be similar but 30-06 allows more versatility. 308 if you intend on shooting a lot from a bench... but you did say hunting. Basically almost everyone makes the comparison to the 30-06 so it's your best bet on a first hunting rifle. From there you can make an informed decision on bigger or smaller caliber for your next rifle.

These threads never cease to rack up a 20+ page of,.... generally arguments LOL

Flip a coin for hunting... really.

I luuurv my baby t3 308 though :)
