Hi,

I have pondered for sometime what I wanted for a rifle? Semi or bolt action, and what caliber-308' 338 lapua or 300 win mag. My goals were this, I need a rifle that can(would like to stick with 308):
- shoot accurately out to 1000 yards for potential F Class competitions
- have a detachable Mag that can hold 10 rounds
- be completely bedded
- must have heavy barrel
- be able to double as a deer hunting rifle
- use a 8-32x56 scope or larger (again F Class shooting)
I do not have the budget for two separate rifles, I would like to think I can use one rifle to do both. Perhaps I am being naive in thinking this, I am here to ask from those who know the anwsers or can offer constructive advice.

Cheers,

Bigmoe

Remington 700 5r in .308, with aftermarket bottom metal and AICS mags.
All new for ~$1500.
Bedding done at home for $20.

If you have to share a scope between hunting and paper, buy for hunting.

Willing to have a two scope system viper for hunting but want a powerful enough scope that I don't need a spotting scope. Was at shooting comp held at st Charles range a couple weeks back, met a super nice guy from crieghton, sask that gave me great advice. He uses a sightron 8-32x56 but my eyes are old so my motto in life "go bigger or stay home" holds true here

I answered you in another thread, but if you can get a buddy who's LE to get you a Savage LE special, they shoot like a house a'fire all day long! 5 guys have them here, and we've had all of them shooting half inch groups in no time. I bought a LRP in 6.5 Creedmoor the year before and wish I hadn't, purely because of price. They come in at 599. Might be some on the Exchange.

I bought at Frontier and this seems real close, but no where as cheap.

Here's the actual page... You can see the differences. Not sure if the first one has 5R rifling or not.

if it has to double as a hunting rifle what is the max weight you can/are willing to lug around?

I hope I have a good solution for you. I like shooting targets and hunting with the same gun. How? A rifle with two switchable barrels! One caliber for target and other caliber for hunting. Say you like 308, find other caliber with the same bolt face.

308 and 6BR, 260 Rem, 6.5x284 Norma, 30-06, etc...

Savage rifles are easier to switch the barrels with the barrel nut.

There is no reason why a target rifle can't double as a hunting rifle IF:

1) The caliber and cartridge are sufficient for the game to be hunted
2) Your willing to handle the weight. Precision rifles are in general more heavy.
3) Cost. Precision rifles CAN (but don't have to) cost a lot of money.

The way the rifle is carried will make the difference. I use a biathlon sling and have no problem hiking in the mountains since the weight is evenly distributed along the back.

x2 on this, my rifle for this season, is 23+ lbs, i use a biathalon sling and no problems packing it for hours, for longer hikes my gunslinger2 pack, with the food / water for the day is what i use

The R700 5R is the best 'double duty' rifle i can think of. You don't need a detachable mag - not used in F-Class and something else to snag stuff on when hunting. It will be a wee bit heavy for hunting and a wee bit wanting for F-Class but that is the nature of compromise. Try changing out the stock for a A3 Light Tactical if double duty is really your goal.

Sightron Siii 8-32x56 is the best double duty scope but I'd go with a Siii 10-50 for F-Class and a 3-9 for the hunting.

Tomochan,

Thanks, great advise, perhaps I should concentrate on f class and just keep using my 100 year old lee enfield 303 British for deer hunting. I just wanted to modernize. I like the 10-50 advise thanks

Don't forget about bullet choice and weight. The Hornady match BTHP isn't going to do well for ethical kills but great BC for long range stuff. If you can experiment and decide on a 'perfect' load then it will only make your ability to make clean good shots at a little longer ranges than most hunters.
