Is there a middle ground between Igman .308 ($12/box) and Federal Gold Match ($35/box) for factory target ammo? A round in the $15-$25/box range, that is readily available (in BC), reasonably clean, and accurate.

I'm shooting a Rem 700 VS.

Thanks

Igman .308 isn't target ammo. You have no guarantee that even the high priced Gold Match ammo will shoot well in your rifle either. Reloading with match grade bullets is best for target shooting.

being that he is not setup to reload, what are the alternatives? He knows the Igman isn't match ammo, but he's looking for something that will group decent, and cost less than FGM.

I guess it depends on how accurate you want to be. You can set yourself up to reload pretty cheaply with a lee press, collet dies, powder measure etc. I would guess he is in target shooting for the long term and a small investment now will have greater pay offs. I've bought the Winchester and Federal match grade ammo and liked it but I still go back to reloads.

Paying way to much for Federal Gold Medal Match!!

You should be able to find Federal, Winchester, or Blackhills for between $21 to $28 per box, may be better if you buy case lot at a time.

Bounce me an email on the site and I'll give you a list of names.

why don't you find someone in your area who reloads and strike a deal with him? My coach used to do this. IIRC he bought the brass bullets and powder and bought some spares for the guy doing the reloading. It's a lot cheaper and if you have a reliable reloader, you have match grade ammunition for a good price. Also you have made a new friend.

Call Paul Reibin at Range Sports Unlimited (854 Pleasant Street, Kamloops, BC V2C 3B5 Phone: 250-372-7030 FAX: 250-372-3405) ask if he still carries Gold Cross 308 ammunition...some have had excellent success with it...

See i tried a box of hornady 168 match, and they werent as accurate as the Remington Express Corelokt 150gr i use. I shoot a remington 700p

I tried Norma DiamondLine ammo last summer. Very good performance and brass quality is very good. Keep them to reload !
Price is good too. I can buy a box for less than 30$

You may laugh at this guys but I've had wonderful groups with the cheap Norinco 7.62x51 Milsurp up to 500m...Fired with a 10FP.

If you ask 10 guys you will get 10 answers, none that may be right forr your rifle. The only way to find out what shoots best in ANY rifle is to experiment, each rifle has its own likes and dislikes.
Reloading is the best option as it is easy to alter loads and components, which is why most serious shooters reload (that and it costs less to shoot)
With you not having reloading gear, that pretty much puts you in the try it and see catagory.
Some of the Hornady ammo shows good promise, but then some of the Winchester white box stuff works well in some guns.
Certainly not always is the most highly touted and expensive ammo the most accurate in any given rifle

For the price of about 10 boxes of FGM, you can have yourself set up for reloading. Then you are on your way to making the best ammo for your rifle.
This of course has it's draw backs. You will enjoy shooting more with accurate ammo. It is a quick return of your investment, you will shoot more, so you have to spent more time reloading. The obsession will go on and on.

You know, no one ever put it that way, ("For the price of about 10 boxes of FGM, you can have yourself set up for reloading"). I should give my head a shake, I always by case from same lot at a time. Of course, my time is at a premium so I don't always have time to spend playing with the reloading stuff, (Have access to a really nice set up that the owner never uses).

Of course, most do end up reloading and its hard to argue that one will end up with the best load for your rifle.
