I was recently given about 900 308 Win cases (all rem) and have no immediate need for them. I assume it would be easier to try and trade them for 22-250 brass but I like to tinker so I will ask this instead. Form dies seem to be really expensive so is there a combination of full length dies I could use to neck down and move the shoulder back? I've never used form dies but I assume that they would put an exagerated taper on the case and fireforming would be necessary at the end. I can't think of any FL dies (Lee RGB for low $) that wouldn't crush the case when moving the shoulder. Any ideas?

You don't need form dies. Just get a 22-250 trim die, lube up REAL good with a quality wax, and run the 308 into the trim die. It might help if you back out two or 3 times and re-lube, as necessary. File down the case, and it'll be 90% formed to 22-250. Then FL size in a standard 22-250 die, and load 'em up.

It works fine, but you need to make sure your necks aren't too thick or pressures will be excessive. All in all, it's more trouble than it's worth, unless you're trying to get 22-250 'match' brass from Lapua match, or rem BR with the small primer pocket

Size 308 to 7mm-08 or 260 Rem

then size to 250-3000 and trim to length

then size to 22-250, and final trim to correct length, then chamfer case mouth.

Necks will be thick, probably too thick for your chamber, but you might get lucky. If not lucky, they will have to be reamed or turned to correct thickness.

Thanks for responding. I might just try a few to see what the neck wall thickness will be. Fired brass from the rifle I have measures .258" across and my current brass+slugs load up to +/- .251" at the neck so maybe thicker brass at the neck sized with on oversize bushing die will tighten things up. The gun shoots fairly well now but if I can get 4-500 cases whithin 1 grain of eachother out of the 900 it might warrant the cost and time.

I used a 250 savage trim die first, filed to length, then 22-250. Necks were too thick so outside turned them.Took some time but was interesting. Mark
