hey everyone
i was looking at purchasing a model 7600 in 308 but i would like too get it rebarreled too 358 simply because i can use heavier lead and my shots aren't that far so the 358 is a better choice for me,where can i get my rifle barrel changed or rebarreled i live in hamilton ontario if anyone has info it would be apreciated thanks for your time
 
Any competent gunsmith can rebarrel and cut a chamber. Any local gun shop worth its salt will have contacts 4 U in your own area probably.

However the work is expensive and the total price, if buying a new pump gun, may be more than U expect. - for quality work. George at Elwood Epps in Orillia could do that work and many others I could mention in Ontario too. Wes at Elwood Epps (elwoodepps.com) likes .358 Win himself and was trying to bring in some 35Rem 7600 pumps new fron Remington to rechamber to 358 or 35 whelen this past year. Don't know if that actually happened. Phone him and tell him what U want.

Here's a thought to consider. If U want to throw heavy lead out a 358 tube then get a used pump 7600 in 35 Whelen. The short action cartridges use the exact same long action 7600 receiver. Therefore you're carrying around an extra 1/2" of unnecessary iron when chambered for a short action round like the 358Win.. So consider a 35 Whelen chambering. It's easy to load down to 358 levels or else chase 338 WinMag power levels if U are so inclined. Get a good used one as none of the Remington short run of new ones has yet to come north from Grices in Pennsylvannia I understand. There are a few used ones out there - especially at gun shows I've found. Go for $650 if good ones down to $525 or so in my experience. I paid 650 for mine which is a very good one

Either way - 358 or 35 whelen- you'll have an awesome hunting rifle!

i would rather get a 7600 in 358 because either theres not too many out there or no one has one at all, i would just like an extra ordinary rifle,and i like a pump and i like the short action 358 over the whelen so i would like too build i nice rifle that no one else has.
 
Supercub, on the board here had a 760 rechambered to 358 Win, and I know at least one other guy who did the same. Both rifles worked out great.

Maybe he will chime in here with his thoughts.

Ron Smith in Wimbourne AB. will bore out your 308 to 358 and rechamber it for a lot less than a new barrel. It will shoot pretty good too!
The reboring he has done for me has been outstanding.

I don't think so Ted, 308 & 358s run the same pressures so I don't see why you would? Slip him a PM :)

They do run the same breech pressure, however the pressure curve in the barrel is quite different between the two. The pressure in the 358 drops off much quicker than the 308...............or at least I have read that somewher, so it must be true. :wink:

Because the pressure drops off so much quicker in the 358 as the bullet rides down the barrel, the gas pressure is much lower when the bulletpasses the the gas orifice in the 358 than in the 308. Because of this there is less energy transferred to the gas piston to operate the action.

This can be corrected by enlarging the hole, or using different powders which keep the pressure curve up longer. Experimenting with different diameters was how Jack Lott did his Browning BAR that he rebarrelled to 458 Winchester. He never did get reliable functioning handloading with any powder that gave decent velocies, however by enlaging the hole a bit at a time, he eventually accomplished so using factory 500 gr loads. :roll:

I have sent a PM to 88 man asking how it worked out for him. It would be neat to have a semi-auto 358 Win if it were reliable. 8)

Not sure Ted if you have to be that particular on pressure? After all there is a vast variable in pressures between loads, min to max loads. I have downloaded a M-100 to 2200fps with 170 30-30 bullets & had it cycle just fine! The only diff I could see was the direction the action thru the cases :)

Let me know what 88 says :)

Warning NOT ALL M-100s are equal :!:
Some won't digest reduced loads & some won't digest round nose bullets, let alone flat points :!:

Of course I traded away the first one I ever had, the one that would do it all :roll:

I did have a 760 in 35Rem rechambered to .358Win. No other alterations were needed other than the chamber job and switch to .308 magazine. No feed probs, worked great!

I got conned out of it (not really! :D ) by a Yukon guide while at WhyNot's place back in '98 and missed it alot. I later bought a 7600 in 35Whelen to replace it.

Both are good guns. Get whichever one you like, caliberwise that is, as the difference between a 358Win and 35W is the same as the diif between a .308 and 30/06 -----> NOT MUCH :!:
