I know I haven't done it YET!!
I punched the numbers and I think its is doable. 155gr lapua scenars @ 3000fps.
maximum height at 171 yards, after that its falling out of the sky. 89moa or 1682 inch or 140 foot drop. Still at 932 fps at 1800 yards. Drops through the speed of sound after 1400. 3.5 seconds to reach the target. I'll be using a Savage model 12 F-TR 30 inch pipe. With I don't know how many shim's under the base.

So has anyone hit a mile target with a 308 rifle? This is fun.

I have the NF 5.5-22X56 and will probably order a 40 moa base, instead of shiming the existing one. The base will come off after the experiment and go on the 6.5-284 for my mile shoot next year.

Let me know how you do Tigrr!

I havent been able to keep my bullets stable out that far yet.
Its good to see you posting again!

How r u doing on the " house"?

I think you'd be better off with one of the berger tactical bullets, i've read that they're made for staying stable through the transonic phase of flight.

I have 155gr - Bergers, Nosler custom competitions, Lapua scenars, Sierra match kings and probably a few more brands. I will load a few of them all. Mostly use Nosler CC's.
As for the house I'm putting on the valley flashing today. Tin going on hopefully later today, if its not too windy. Windows later in the week.

A 308 out to a mile is straightforward to do. As long as you have enough elevation and a bullet that will go subsonic, you can do it easily.

Tune for the least amount of vertical at 300yds. 1/4 min vertical should be possible even if the windage is 1/2 min.

Dial up to 1000yds and the bullets should plunk nicely onto a milk jug sized target on a consistent bases.

Now you just have to see which bullet will go subsonic. Run the numbers through a ballistics program and shoot at least 100yds BEYOND where the the bullet is supposed to go subsonic. I prefer 200yds as it takes time for a bullet to tumble.

If all is well at this point, just crank in the tons of elevation and walk yourself out to a mile.

I have found 1500yds to be quite easy in calm air. Beyond that, you are really falling hard so each 50 to 100yds is a massive change in elevation. As long as you can see the impacts, doping is easy.

If the bullet you have will not tolerate going subsonic, the Hrn 155gr Amax (and other amax bullets) will.

There is/was a club in the US that was plinking out to 3000yds/m so a mile is not all that far.

Big one is being able to adjust for all that elevation change without massive windage change as well.

Enjoy and let us know how you make out....

I can say that the Berger 90gr BT has no issue going to 1500yds out of a 223 and a 7 twist barrel in case you can't make your 308 work. I will set the rig up with massive elevation to make the final 260yds.

Jerry

PS I think the Hrn 208gr Amax might just be a gem for this type of fun. Muzzle brake and lots of ballast and you should be able to watch your own trace.

At the summerland shoot a couple years ago there were a bunch of us running cloned 308s from ATRS shooting 175gr SMK at just over 2800fps out of 21.75" heavy barrels getting consistent hits at a mile. The wind along the opposite valley wall played with out bullets a bit but after realizing there was nothing we could do for adjustment, we just let them rain down on the boulder.
I remember shooting at a white rock on a sandy bank that was 1550yds out and with the rock being about 12"H x 20"L, our bullets would dance all around that rock with clouds of dust coming off the rock at times also.
Best of luck to ya and try to suspend a chunk of steel so you can hear the reports. That would be rewarding for sure!!!

Just for giggles I'll load up some of my cast bullets as well. 160gr, 180gr, 200gr all gas checked. Oh sending them at 3000fps will probably leave some lead in the barrel of my target rifle.
40 moa base with 10moa in the burris signature Z rings 70 moa of up in the NF 5.5-22X56 and another 10 in the reticle. I should be able to slow those lead cast down to 2500 and avoid leading.

How about a friendly competition for your shoot next year. This idea has been floating in my head for a couple months too. ;)

Which part Canuck? The 308 to a mile part or the cast bullet as far as you can send it part?
Or maybe both.
I am going to cheat though as soon as the 40 moa rail shows up. I will be testing loads as soon as I have time!!
Valley flashing installed and 6 sheets of tin installed. Nap lasted from 6:30pm till 8:00 pm. 30 times up and down ladder. I'll be out at the crack of 10:00am to install more tin tomorrow.

Cast with the 45/70's, I'm looking for a buffalo classic for some black powder blasting.

Ill work on the 175gr trip to a mile of you want to try the 155gr. I have a Shilen Select match 26" on my 308 now so I think it would be a tonne of fun to stretch it waaaaaaay out there.

Your NF 5.5-22 has 100MOA of elevation.

Your NF 5.5-22 has 100MOA of elevation.

Yes it has 100MOA of adjustment, but 34 is used up to reach 100 yards, 66 left. Then I think its 32 more MOA to 1000 yards. I seem to recall I need 89 moa to reach 1760 yards. When I calculated it, I think I was almost 20 MOA shy so I will order a 40 MOA base to be safe. Now I have to find someone who has two in stock for a Savage model 12 F-TR short action!! LIG

45/70 out to 1000 or it starts to hurt. But the 308 is destined to be a mile target puncher.

A 1 in 10, 1 in 12 twist rifling will stabilize a 208 / 210 grain bullet I'm told. I have to go see a buddy about some bullets!! I have 200 grain cast bullets with gas checks!! I have an unfired Savage Model 12 F-TR 308. But its not for sale. Its been hibernating for 3+ years now. I'm saving it for Nokomis Drillers in 2013!! LIG
