I was playing around with my new Lee trim die for the 308, and it was trimming to about 2.007 so I thought I was ok. Maybe the pilot that goes through the primer hole got hot, and was subject to distorting, but it started trimming below the "trim to length" of 2.005, mostly around 2.001/2.002. I managed to lengthen the pilot by pinning it against a piece of metal and hammering it a bit, stretching it back to trim 2.007 again.
With these short cases, I know I am going to loose some neck tension. Fortunately case length has nothing to do with headspace on a bottle-neck rifle case, as headspace is controlled by the distance from the case head to a datum line on the shoulder - so I am not worried about headspace.
The only potential problem I can think of will be with crimping.
I think if I shoot them, and then full length resize they should stretch a bit and I might be ok.
My question is to you guys am I missing anything here, and do you have any reason as to not shoot these shortened pieces of brass?
Thanks
