308 vs 30-06

The 30-06 is very often the recommended choice for all north America big game hunting applications . The most common bullet weight used is the 150 , 165 and 180 .

With this bullet range what does the 30-06 bring to the party that a 308 win doesn't ? Thinking of the new bullet designs , the average extra 100 fps from the 30-06 really doesn't mean anything . So is it fair to say the 308 is on par with anything the 30-06 can do ?
 
lol........get ready for the firestorm........imho in those bullet weights the difference is negligible between the two......I feel the main advantage of the 30/06 is powder capacity.......so if you wanted to use heavier bullets [ ie 200 or 220 ] the 30/06 would then have a more distinct advantage.......the 30/06 is more versatile......some people might argue the 308 is more accurate in part because of a shorter and stiffer action

you know this has been done to death , just like 270 vs 30-06 270 vs 6.5x55 7mm mag vs everything ect....ect...ect..... ....... get the idea ? there is the search function that will get you all the same responses and debates that may happen all over again ......

What ...you should read ..the reply I made was the 30-06 does not have 200 fps in factory ammo over the 308 and if yo don't like the thread stay off ..tks

Exactly. 30-06 ammo is routinely loaded mild to insulate ammo companies from law suits. Thousands of old sloppy military Springfields in use still and America will sue you for getting the time of day wrong. My crono tests show @100fps as the difference between the 2 with 180gr bullets. No moose or deer will be offended as it expires from one or the other loading.
 
Within realistic hunting distances using 150g to 180g bullets the differences are so small as to not be an issue...(and yes, I have both)
Others might spaz out and defend one or the other for their own emotional reasons...but that's their problem...lol!

If you put two cartridges on the table, 30-06 looks ugly while 308 looks cute. As can be proved by this photo. The left one is 308, the right one is 30-06

The difference is whatever the owner prefers I'd say. Everyone has a favourite... For some it's the 308, for some the 30-06, for some the 300 short mag...

If you like it, shoot it, if ya don't, get something else. All I know is I'm pretty sure anything bigger than a 22 will probably do the trick on anything I'll shoot lol.
 
Same diff. Like the others say short vs. long. Action.
I believe that the .308 was originally released to replace upgrade the 30-06?
I'm a .270win guy so...
 
i prefer the 308 with a 150 grn and the 30 06 with a 180. with the 150's they seem very close in velocity. the 30 06 edges out the 308 with 180's. i find this with reloads factory ammo appears to even out the gap.
